Little\/MediaNews Group\/Reading Eagle via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/topics\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/\">COVID-19 outbreak<\/a> has altered daily life for Americans \u2013 from <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/05\/06\/telework-may-save-u-s-jobs-in-covid-19-downturn-especially-among-college-graduates\/\">how they work<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/04\/15\/lower-income-parents-most-concerned-about-their-children-falling-behind-amid-covid-19-school-closures\/\">attend school<\/a>, to the ways they <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/04\/30\/from-virtual-parties-to-ordering-food-how-americans-are-using-the-internet-during-covid-19\/\">connect with others<\/a>, to how <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/04\/30\/few-americans-say-their-house-of-worship-is-open-but-a-quarter-say-their-religious-faith-has-grown-amid-pandemic\/\">they worship<\/a>. These experiences can vary with age. But fewer in this age group \u2013 32% \u2013 say it is a major threat to their personal finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, younger Americans are more likely to view the coronavirus as a major threat to their personal finances than as a major threat to their personal health. Four-in-ten adults ages 18 to 29 say the outbreak is <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2020\/05\/12\/most-americans-say-federal-government-has-primary-responsibility-for-covid-19-testing\/#more-young-adults-view-coronavirus-as-major-threat-to-their-finances-than-to-their-health\">a major threat to their financial situation<\/a>, and 26% say it is a threat to their health. This compares with 42% of those ages 50 to 64 and a quarter of those 65 and older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One-quarter of workers ages 16 to 24 have <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/06\/09\/hispanic-women-immigrants-young-adults-those-with-less-education-hit-hardest-by-covid-19-job-losses\">lost their jobs<\/a> during the coronavirus downturn, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/06\/09\/hispanic-women-immigrants-young-adults-those-with-less-education-hit-hardest-by-covid-19-job-losses\/\">Center analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data<\/a>. Young adults also tend to work in the industries <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/03\/27\/young-workers-likely-to-be-hard-hit-as-covid-19-strikes-a-blow-to-restaurants-and-other-service-sector-jobs\/\">most vulnerable to job loss<\/a> related to the coronavirus shutdown. Among the 19.3 million workers ages 16 to 24 in the economy overall, 9.2 million, or nearly half, are <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/03\/27\/young-workers-likely-to-be-hard-hit-as-covid-19-strikes-a-blow-to-restaurants-and-other-service-sector-jobs\/\">employed in service-sector establishments<\/a>. In areas with more severe COVID-19 outbreaks, employers in these industries were among the most likely to close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Majorities of adults under 50 say the internet has been essential to them during the coronavirus outbreak, compared with about a third of those 65 and older. <\/strong>An early April survey found that as people turned to the internet to replace in-person social and business encounters, about six-in-ten adults under 30 (62%) <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2020\/04\/30\/53-of-americans-say-the-internet-has-been-essential-during-the-covid-19-outbreak\/\">said the internet has been essential<\/a> to them during the outbreak, while 65% of adults ages 30 to 49 felt this way. This compares with about half (49%) of those ages 50 to 64 and 31% of those 65 and older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same survey found that younger adults were more likely than others to have held <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/04\/30\/from-virtual-parties-to-ordering-food-how-americans-are-using-the-internet-during-covid-19\/\">virtual parties<\/a> and gatherings with their family and friends, watched concerts or other live-streamed events and participated in online fitness activities. The Center\u2019s late April-early May survey showed <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/05\/26\/few-u-s-adults-say-theyve-been-diagnosed-with-coronavirus-but-more-than-a-quarter-know-someone-who-has\/\">no noteworthy differences<\/a> across age groups in who reported knowing someone in these situations. Overall, 28% of Americans said they personally know someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19, and 20% said they know someone who has been hospitalized or who has died from it. Adults 18 to 29 were more than twice as likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/03\/30\/people-financially-affected-by-covid-19-outbreak-are-experiencing-more-psychological-distress-than-others\/\">fall into the \u201chigh distress\u201d category<\/a> than those 65 and older (33% vs. 15%). A repeat of that question in <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/05\/07\/a-third-of-americans-experienced-high-levels-of-psychological-distress-during-the-coronavirus-outbreak\/\">late April<\/a> showed a similar pattern. The other categories were \u201cmedium distress\u201d and \u201clow distress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Americans ages 50 and older are more likely to say their faith is stronger because of the pandemic. <\/strong>In <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/04\/30\/few-americans-say-their-house-of-worship-is-open-but-a-quarter-say-their-religious-faith-has-grown-amid-pandemic\/\">late April<\/a>, a Center survey found that adults 50 and older were more likely than those under 50 to say their own religious faith has become stronger as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. For instance, 29% of those 65 and older reported their faith has become stronger, compared with 17% of those ages 18 to 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This trend reflects the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2019\/10\/17\/in-u-s-decline-of-christianity-continues-at-rapid-pace\/#generation-gap\">wide generational gap<\/a> in religious affiliation and attendance among Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>U.S. adults under 50 are more likely to say that, as coronavirus cases were first reported around the world, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2020\/04\/16\/trumps-handling-of-coronavirus-outbreak\/#nearly-two-thirds-of-americans-say-trump-administrations-response-to-coronavirus-was-too-slow\">President Donald Trump was \u201ctoo slow\u201d<\/a> to take major steps to address the threat of the outbreak to the United States<\/strong>. Three-quarters of those ages 18 to 49 say this, compared with 55% of adults ages 50 and older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general, younger Americans are <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2019\/03\/28\/majority-says-trump-has-done-too-little-to-distance-himself-from-white-nationalists\/ppp_03-28-19_release-00-07\/\">less likely<\/a> to approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president and are more likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2018\/10\/01\/trump-gets-negative-ratings-for-many-personal-traits-but-most-say-he-stands-up-for-his-beliefs\/\">disagree with him<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2020\/06\/12\/majorities-of-americans-say-news-coverage-of-george-floyd-protests-has-been-good-trumps-public-message-wrong\/pj_2020-06-12_media-and-protests_0-06\/\">a range of issues<\/a>. Younger Republicans are also more likely than older ones to say they dislike the way Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2020\/03\/05\/few-americans-express-positive-views-of-trumps-conduct-in-office\/\">conducts himself as president<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When it comes to foreign affairs, American adults under 30 are more likely than older adults to expect <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/06\/02\/how-americans-envision-a-post-pandemic-world-order\/\"><em>no changes<\/em> in international cooperation<\/a> once the coronavirus crisis is over, a late April survey found.<\/strong> Just under half (46%) of Americans ages 18 to 29 think the status quo will be maintained, compared with only about a third of 30-
