During the first 60 days of the new administration, roughly half of stories about the Biden administration mentioned Trump in some way (48%), according to an April 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2021\/04\/28\/at-100-day-mark-coverage-of-biden-has-been-slightly-more-negative-than-positive-varied-greatly-by-outlet-type\/\">Pew Research Center report<\/a> looking at news coverage of Biden\u2019s earliest days in office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The share of stories referencing Trump is about the same when looking across news outlets grouped by the political makeup of their audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among outlets with right-leaning audiences, 47% of stories about the Biden administration also referenced the former president. That figure was the same for outlets with a mixed audience (47%) and on par with outlets that have a left-leaning audience (50%). The Center has analyzed news coverage of the beginning of each of the five presidential administrations since President Bill Clinton in 1993. The most recent study is comprised of two components, an analysis of media content and a survey analysis. The findings here are only from the analysis of media content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The analysis of news coverage of Biden\u2019s first 60 days in office is based on a selection of media coverage collected from Jan. 21 to March 21, 2021. Stories were collected from television, radio, digital and print outlets and coded by a team of nine coders trained specifically for this project. Each story was analyzed for whether Trump was mentioned. Knight Foundation.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"trump-less-present-in-biden-administration-coverage-as-time-progressed\">Trump less present in Biden administration coverage as time progressed<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">References to Trump decreased over time, however, and were more common in certain kinds of stories than others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-310-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-14129\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/05\/24\/trump-mentioned-in-about-half-of-biden-stories-during-early-weeks-in-office-but-less-so-over-time\/ft_2021-05-24_trumpmediamentions_02-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dfd8d9\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dfd8d9;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/05\/ft_2021.05.24_trumpmediamentions_02.png?resize=480,785 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/05\/ft_2021.05.24_trumpmediamentions_02.png?resize=620,1014 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"507\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/05\/ft_2021.05.24_trumpmediamentions_02.png?w=310\" alt=\"Mentions of Trump in Biden stories decreased over time\" class=\"wp-image-14129 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the first two days following the inauguration (Jan. 21 and 22), roughly three-quarters (72%) of Biden administration stories mentioned Trump in some way, and 60% of stories continued to reference Trump in the following week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, as the new administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/interactive\/2021\/politics\/biden-executive-orders\/\">rolled out initiatives<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/president-elect-joe-bidens-top-level-appointees-cabinet\/story?id=74362384\">appointed Cabinet members<\/a>, references to Trump declined. During weeks three through six (Feb. 1 to 26), Trump references appeared in around half of stories. They then fell to 30% in week seven (March 1 to 5), the same week that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2021\/3\/2\/22310271\/neera-tanden-biden-omb-withdraws\">Neera Tanden withdrew her name<\/a> as Biden\u2019s nominee to head the White House budget office, Democrats agreed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/biden-senate-democrats-agree-limit-eligibility-1-400-checks-n1259463\">limitations on stimulus check eligibility<\/a> and Senate Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/democrats-agree-to-300-unemployment-benefits-in-covid-19-aid-bill-11614958832?mod=hp_lead_pos3\">overcame an impasse<\/a> on unemployment benefits to advance a COVID-19 relief plan. Also in the news that week were an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/gov-greg-abbott-lift-texas-mask-mandate-open-state-100-n1259329\">end to mask mandates<\/a> in Texas and Mississippi, a high-profile interview between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-56275888\">Meghan Markle and Oprah Winfrey<\/a>, and reports that several Dr. Seuss books ceased publication due to concerns about <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/dr-seuss-books-racist-images-d8ed18335c03319d72f443594c174513\">negative racial imagery<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attention to Trump then picked up somewhat, remaining around 40% for the last two weeks studied (ending on March 21).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stories-closely-related-to-covid-19-were-less-likely-to-mention-trump\">Stories closely related to COVID-19 were less likely to mention Trump<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to looking at which stories about the Biden administration\u2019s early days mentioned Trump, the study also tracked mentions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/topics\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/\">coronavirus pandemic<\/a>. Stories that mentioned COVID-19 in a \u201cmajor\u201d way included references to the virus in at least half the story, while stories mentioning COVID-19 in a \u201cminor\u201d way were those that referenced the pandemic in less than half the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-310-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-14126\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/05\/24\/trump-mentioned-in-about-half-of-biden-stories-during-early-weeks-in-office-but-less-so-over-time\/ft_2021-05-24_trumpmediamentions_03-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e0dbdc\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e0dbdc;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/05\/ft_2021.05.24_trumpmediamentions_03.png?resize=480,615 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/05\/ft_2021.05.24_trumpmediamentions_03.png?resize=620,794 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"397\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/05\/ft_2021.05.24_trumpmediamentions_03.png?w=310\" alt=\"Trump more likely to be mentioned in Biden stories where COVID-19 played little to no role\" class=\"wp-image-14126 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump, who drew criticism for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/virus-outbreak-donald-trump-bob-woodward-politics-6d3932070522339fa91b8b3d3fc046fa\">downplaying the seriousness<\/a> of the virus throughout his time in office, was much less likely to be mentioned in stories where COVID-19 was a major focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About six-in-ten stories that mentioned COVID-19 in a minor way (61%) also referenced Trump. The same was true for more than half of stories that did not mention the virus at all (56%). But the percentage falls to 34% among stories that mentioned COVID-19 in a major way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"trump-made-more-appearances-in-biden-stories-framed-around-leadership-than-policy\">Trump made more appearances in Biden stories framed around leadership than policy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Trump became president in 2017, leadership and character were <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2021\/04\/28\/at-100-day-mark-coverage-of-biden-has-been-slightly-more-negative-than-positive-varied-greatly-by-outlet-type\/#how-early-news-coverage-of-biden-compares-with-coverage-of-trump-in-2017\">dominant factors<\/a> in the media\u2019s framing of his earliest days in office. And this emphasis on Trump\u2019s role as a leader was apparent in coverage of the current president as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-310-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-14120\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/05\/24\/trump-mentioned-in-about-half-of-biden-stories-during-early-weeks-in-office-but-less-so-over-time\/ft_2021-05-24_trumpmediamentions_04-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e1dcdd\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e1dcdd;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/05\/ft_2021.05.24_trumpmediamentions_04.png?resize=480,525 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/05\/ft_2021.05.24_trumpmediamentions_04.png?resize=620,678 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"339\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/05\/ft_2021.05.24_trumpmediamentions_04.png?w=310\" alt=\"Trump was mentioned more often in Biden coverage focused on leadership than on policy\" class=\"wp-image-14120 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among stories about the Biden administration that were framed around Biden\u2019s leadership or character, more than half (56%) mentioned the former president. In comparison, 44% of stories framed around Biden\u2019s policy agenda acknowledged Trump in some way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, coverage of the Biden administration was much more heavily framed around Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2021\/04\/28\/at-100-day-mark-coverage-of-biden-has-been-slightly-more-negative-than-positive-varied-greatly-by-outlet-type\/#how-early-news-coverage-of-biden-compares-with-coverage-of-trump-in-2017\">policy agenda<\/a> than leadership. The majority of stories from Biden\u2019s early days in office were centered on his policy and agenda (65%), while the reverse was true for Trump \u2013 74% of stories about Trump\u2019s early days were framed around leadership, and 26% around his policy agenda.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2021\/04\/28\/news-coverage-of-bidens-early-days-in-office-varied-across-outlet-groups-with-more-focus-on-policy-agenda-than-leadership-character\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five topic areas<\/a>\u00a0covered most in stories about Biden\u2019s early days in office were the economy, health care, immigration, Biden\u2019s nominations and hires, and political skills. Mentions of the former president were particularly prominent in stories about two of these topic areas. Among stories about Biden\u2019s political skills, about three-quarters (72%) referenced Trump. That\u2019s roughly on par with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/05\/12\/immigration-was-a-top-focus-of-early-biden-coverage-especially-among-outlets-with-right-leaning-audiences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stories about immigration<\/a>\u00a0(68%) \u2013 an issue that was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2017\/10\/05\/4-race-immigration-and-discrimination\/#most-say-immigrants-strengthen-the-country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">particularly polarizing<\/a>\u00a0during Trump\u2019s term \u2013 but well above other common story topics such as Biden\u2019s nominations (48%), health care (37%) or the economy (29%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: Here is <a
