For more than 50 years, U.S. newspapers had more annual revenue from advertising than from circulation (e.g., selling subscriptions or single issues). In prime time, Fox News\u2019 average audience increased by 61%, CNN\u2019s increased by 72% and MSNBC\u2019s grew by 28%, according to Comscore TV Essentials\u00ae data. Other TV news sectors also saw audience growth, but to smaller degrees. The average audience for <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/network-news\/\">network nightly news<\/a>, for example, increased by between 7% and 16%, and the average audience for <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/local-tv-news\/\">local TV evening news<\/a> increased 4%. <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/hispanic-and-black-news-media\/\">Spanish-language news<\/a> on Telemundo and Univision also generally saw an audience increase in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-420-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-13118\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/07\/27\/6-key-takeaways-about-the-state-of-the-news-media-in-2020\/ft_21-07-21_sotnmkeytakeaways_3-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f5f4f4\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f5f4f4;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/07\/FT_21.07.21_SOTNMKeyTakeaways_3.png?resize=480,598 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/07\/FT_21.07.21_SOTNMKeyTakeaways_3.png?resize=782,974 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/07\/FT_21.07.21_SOTNMKeyTakeaways_3.png?resize=840,1046 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"523\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/07\/FT_21.07.21_SOTNMKeyTakeaways_3.png?w=420\" alt=\"A line graph showing the political advertising revenue at local TV companies\" class=\"wp-image-13118 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Political ad revenue at local TV stations was <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/local-tv-news\/\">dramatically higher in 2020<\/a>. <\/strong>Though it always rises in election years, it totaled $2 billion in 2020 \u2013 far above any prior year, according to an analysis of SEC filings of five major publicly held local TV station companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Individual giving is making up a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/public-broadcasting\/\">larger piece of the revenue pie<\/a> for public broadcasters.<\/strong> In 2014, for example, just 3% of nonpublic funding for the PBS NewsHour came from individuals. By 2020, the share had climbed to 24%. Over the same period, contributions from corporations fell from 41% to 18%, according to information provided by PBS NewsHour. As of 2019, more ad revenue came from digital advertising than nondigital advertising, such as print and broadcast. A major driver of this trend has been mobile advertising, which rose roughly sixtyfold between 2011 and 2020, from $1.7 billion to $102.6 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>While terrestrial radio listenership declined in 2020, the audience for online audio has grown<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> NPR\u2019s weekly podcast audience, for instance, nearly doubled in the past two years, from about 7 million in 2018 to about 14 million in 2020, according to data provided by the broadcaster. (NPR now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2020\/08\/radio-listening-has-plummeted-npr-is-reaching-a-bigger-audience-than-ever-what-gives\/\">makes more money<\/a> from underwriting on its podcasts than its radio shows.) The decrease coincided with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/research\/coronavirus-has-shown-us-a-world-without-traffic-can-we-sustain-it\/\">sharp decrease in automobile use<\/a> during the COVID-19 pandemic.
