(Mario Tama\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While many public and private employers in the United States have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/02\/23\/business\/office-vaccine-mandate.html\">required workers to be vaccinated<\/a> against COVID-19, some <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/health-law-and-business\/covid-vaccine-mandate-religious-exemptions-give-hospitals-leeway\">are allowing exemptions<\/a> for people who say the vaccine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/religious-exemption-vaccine-mandate-philadelphia-archdiocese-covid-catholic-national-catholic-bioethics-center-20210818.html\">violates their religious beliefs<\/a>. For this analysis, we surveyed 10,441 U.S. adults from March 7-13, 2022. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses, which gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/our-methods\/u-s-surveys\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/W104-topline-for-SR2-Release_FINAL.pdf\">the questions used<\/a> for this analysis, along with responses, and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/W104-SR2-Methodology-_FINAL.pdf\">its methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even among those who say most religious objectors are just using religion as an excuse to avoid the vaccine, there are more people who think religious objectors should be allowed to keep their jobs (37% of all U.S. adults) than think religious objectors should be required to get the vaccine to remain employed (29%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the overwhelming majority of those who say religious objections to COVID-19 vaccines <em>are<\/em> sincere also say that objectors should be able to keep their jobs, despite employers\u2019 vaccine mandates (27% of all U.S. adults). But even among Republicans and White evangelical Protestants \u2013 two groups with <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/science\/2022\/02\/09\/increasing-public-criticism-confusion-over-covid-19-response-in-u-s\/#vaccination-rates-among-u-s-adults\">comparatively low vaccination rates<\/a> \u2013 half or more express skepticism of religious objections to COVID-19 vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly four-in-ten Republicans and independents who lean toward the Republican Party (42%) believe that most people who say they have a religious objection to getting the coronavirus vaccine sincerely believe getting the vaccine is against their religion; a larger share (55%) say these individuals are just using religion as an excuse to avoid vaccination. About half of White evangelicals also believe religious objections are largely insincere (52%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among Democrats and those who lean toward the Democratic Party, a large majority (77%) say these objectors are just using religion as an excuse. An identical share of religiously unaffiliated Americans \u2013 those who describe themselves as atheist, agnostic or \u201cnothing in particular\u201d \u2013 express the same view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans are largely united behind the idea that those who refuse a COVID-19 vaccine on the basis of religion should <em>not<\/em> lose their jobs. That includes 61% who doubt the sincerity of religious objectors and a small segment (5%) who think people\u2019s religious objections are sincere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the other end of the spectrum, those who say employers should neither require nor encourage vaccines overwhelmingly agree that religious objectors should be allowed to keep their jobs. In this group, 86% say these individuals should remain employed even if they don\u2019t get a COVID-19 vaccine, including substantial shares who think religious objections are sincere (49%) and who do not (37%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-640-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-13468\"
