In fact, it\u2019s lower than in both Joe Biden\u2019s presidency and Trump\u2019s first term, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These changes are mostly driven by shifts in how Americans view the climate of free expression for people in their own partisan coalition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Republicans and Republican-leaning independents increasingly say members of the GOP are <em>very<\/em> comfortable to freely and openly express their views.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meanwhile, the share of Democrats and Democratic leaners who say this about Democrats has dropped.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-plus-icon has-border-color has-ui-gray-light-border-color has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background has-sans-serif-font-family is-layout-flow wp-container-core-details-is-layout-61b01db2 wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(0.875em, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2em) * 0.009), 0.88em);\"><summary>How we did this<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pew Research Center asked these questions to understand public perceptions about the political climate for Republicans and Democrats to express their ideas. We also sought to explore how those views may have changed over time. We surveyed 3,589 U.S. adults from April 7 to 13, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Interviews were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other factors. <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">Read more about the ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/05\/SR_25.05.30_rep-dem-comfort_questionnaire.pdf\">questions used for this analysis<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/05\/SR_25.05.30_rep-dem-comfort_topline.pdf\">topline<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2025\/04\/23\/trump-100-days-methodology\/\">survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-comfortable-do-americans-think-republicans-are-to-express-their-views\">How comfortable do Americans think Republicans are to express their views?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four-in-ten U.S. adults say Republicans are <em>very<\/em> comfortable expressing their political views. That share is higher than it was during the first year of the Biden administration, when 35% of Americans said this. It\u2019s also higher than the 36% who said this in 2019, during the first Trump administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-comfortable-do-americans-think-democrats-are-to-express-their-views\">How comfortable do Americans think Democrats are to express their views?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, 36% of Americans say Democrats are very comfortable to express their political views. This is up from 22% in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The share of Republicans saying Democrats are very comfortable expressing their views has fallen slightly, from 57% in 2024 to 54% today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"democrats-views\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Democrats\u2019 views<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About two-in-ten Democrats and Democratic leaners (19%) say Democrats are very comfortable expressing their views. This is far lower than at any point since we first asked the question in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About half of Democrats (52%) say Republicans are very comfortable expressing their views.
