Between 2000 and 2024, the number of Black immigrants in the country steadily increased. Immigrants now make up about one-in-ten Black people in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2025, the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/08\/21\/key-findings-about-us-immigrants\/\">U.S. immigrant population declined<\/a> for the first time in 50 years. It\u2019s unclear how much recent federal actions on immigration \u2013 such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/humanitarian\/temporary-protected-status\">ending or proposing to end temporary deportation protections<\/a> for immigrants from several countries and pausing the issuance of <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/News\/visas-news\/diversity-visa-issuance-updated-guidance.html\">diversity visas<\/a> \u2013 may affect the size of the Black immigrant population specifically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pew Research Center regularly publishes research on <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/topic\/race-ethnicity\/racial-ethnic-groups\/black-americans\/\">Black Americans<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/topic\/immigration-migration\/immigrant-populations\/\">U.S. immigrants<\/a>. This analysis is an update of a post that was originally published in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn more <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/about\/\">about Pew Research Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How did we do this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This analysis includes findings from several federal data sources:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2000 decennial census (5%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2006, 2010, 2015, 2019 and 2024 American Community Surveys (ACS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2025 Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement (CPS ASEC)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data from these sources was provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipums.org\/\">IPUMS from the University of Minnesota<\/a>. We didn\u2019t use the 2005 ACS because it excludes the population in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/glossary\/?term=Group+Quarters+%28GQ%29\">group quarters<\/a>. We also didn\u2019t use the 2020 ACS because <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.ipums.org\/usa\/acspumscovid19.shtml\">data collection issues related to COVID-19<\/a> make it not comparable with other years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Terminology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this analysis, racial groups include all people who self-identify with the given race alone or along with other races or Hispanic ethnicity. This means the <strong>Black population<\/strong> includes people who are single-race Black, multiracial Black and Black Hispanic. Hispanics are of any race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Immigrants<\/strong> are U.S. residents born in foreign countries to parents who aren\u2019t U.S. citizens. People who are <strong>U.S. born<\/strong> are those born in the U.S. or its territories or born in foreign countries to U.S. citizen parents. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We could only look at countries of birth that ACS provides data on. For a full list of countries, read <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.ipums.org\/usa-action\/variables\/BPL#codes_section\">IPUMS\u2019s \u201cBirthplace: Codes and frequencies\u201d page<\/a><a><\/a><a><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Black immigrant population has more than doubled since 2000.&nbsp;<\/strong>The number of Black immigrants living in the U.S. reached 5.6 million in 2024, up from 2.4 million in 2000. This gain accounted for a quarter of the growth in the&nbsp;<em>overall&nbsp;<\/em>Black population, which increased by 13 million during the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black immigrants are 11.4% of the total U.S. Black population. This is similar to the share for White Americans (24%), but it\u2019s much lower than the shares for Hispanic (66%) or Asian Americans (86%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>African-born immigrants are the fastest-growing Black immigrant group in the U.S. <\/strong>Between 2000 and 2024, the number of African-born Black immigrants increased fourfold, from about 600,000 to 2.4 million. Respectively, 40% and 39% immigrated to the U.S. in 2015 or later. (310,000). For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>58% of Guyana-born Black immigrants live in the New York City metro area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>29% of Haitian-born Black immigrants live in the Miami area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>27% of Somalian-born Black immigrants live in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regionally, most Black immigrants live in either the South (44%) or Northeast (34%). The Midwest and West are home to 12% and 10%, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In 2023, most Black immigrants (79%) were in the U.S. legally, while 21% were unauthorized,<\/strong> according to the most recent Pew Research Center estimates. The share of Black immigrants who were in the country without authorization was smaller than the share for U.S. immigrants overall (27%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of U.S. Black immigrants who were unauthorized reached an all-time high in 2023, as did the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/race-and-ethnicity\/2025\/08\/21\/u-s-unauthorized-immigrant-population-reached-a-record-14-million-in-2023\/\">total number of unauthorized immigrants<\/a>. To learn how the unauthorized immigrant population has changed since then, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/race-and-ethnicity\/2025\/08\/21\/u-s-unauthorized-immigrant-population-reached-a-record-14-million-in-2023\/#what-has-happened-to-the-unauthorized-immigrant-population-since-2023\">read our 2025 report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A majority of Black immigrants are U.S. citizens. <\/strong>About six-in-ten Black immigrants (61%) were naturalized U.S. citizens in 2024, up from 44% in 2000. That compares with 51% of all U.S. immigrants who are naturalized citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The share of Black immigrants who are naturalized citizens varies by what region of the world they were born in. Majorities of those born in the Caribbean (64%), Africa (59%) and South America (55%) are naturalized. Meanwhile, 43% of those born in Central America or Mexico have become U.S. citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>An increasing share of Black immigrants have a college degree or more education. <\/strong>In 2024, 35% of Black immigrants ages 25 and older had a bachelor\u2019s degree or higher. That was up from 21% in 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black immigrants\u2019 educational attainment differs significantly by where they were born. Nigerian-born Black immigrants are the most likely to have a college degree (67%), while Mexican-born Black immigrants are among the least likely (13%). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, Black immigrants are about as likely as immigrants overall (36%) to have a college degree.
