A <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2021\/06\/29\/religion-in-india-tolerance-and-segregation\/\">majority Hindu nation<\/a>, India is also home to most of the world\u2019s Sikhs and Jains and some of the world\u2019s largest Muslim and Buddhist populations. India\u2019s dozens of states and union territories also vary widely from each other. Sourcing can be found in the hyperlinks included.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>India\u2019s most populous state or territory had more people than Brazil in 2011, while its least populous one had about as many people as Bermuda.<\/strong> Uttar Pradesh, India\u2019s most populous state, was home to about 200 million people in 2011. That was on par with Greenland and Bermuda, and equaled roughly a tenth of Wyoming\u2019s residents at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hindus were a majority in 28 of India\u2019s 35 states in 2011.<\/strong> Around 94% of the world\u2019s Hindus (966 million) lived in India in 2011. In fact, the Hindu population in any one of these four Indian states \u2013 Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh \u2013 exceeded that of every country outside of India <em>combined<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maharashtra \u2013 which lies on India\u2019s western coast and includes Mumbai, India\u2019s financial center and biggest city \u2013 also had the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/08\/17\/6-facts-about-jains-in-india\/\">largest numbers of Jains and Buddhists.<\/a> Sikhs, meanwhile, were concentrated in the Northern state of Punjab, on the Pakistani border. Bihar, near the northeastern border and not far from Nepal and Bangladesh, had the lowest per capita GDP in India, at about $2,300 (adjusted for purchasing power parity), according to Indian government data. That was <a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/NY.GDP.PCAP.PP.CD\">similar to<\/a> the per capita GDP of Mali or Rwanda. In Kerala, the state with the highest share of literate residents, the rate was 94%. (Kerala was also one of India\u2019s most <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2021\/09\/21\/religious-demography-of-indian-states-and-territories\/pf_09-21_india_demography_3-1\/\">religiously diverse states<\/a>, with large shares of Hindus, Muslims and Christians.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among all Indians, about three-quarters (74%) could read and write in 2011. This was comparable to the literacy rates of Morocco (74%) and Rwanda (73%), and lower than the rate of 99% in the United States, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/SE.ADT.LITR.ZS\">World Bank<\/a>. Worldwide, 84% could read and write in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The average Indian woman has between one and three children in her lifetime, depending on where she lives,<\/strong> a range that is partly tied to differences in wealth and other indicators of prosperity. On the low end of the spectrum, the fertility rate in the Northeastern state of Sikkim is about 1.1, according to India\u2019s most recent 2021 <a href=\"http:\/\/rchiips.org\/nfhs\/factsheet_NFHS-5.shtml\">National Family and Health Survey<\/a>. That rate is <a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/SP.DYN.TFRT.IN?most_recent_value_desc=false\">similar to<\/a> Singapore\u2019s, and well below the approximately 2.1 children per woman needed for each generation to replace itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Bihar, on the other hand, the average woman is expected to have three children, about as many as the average Algerian or Israeli woman. In the U.S., the total fertility rate is 1.6, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/vsrr\/vsrr012-508.pdf\">according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>. The global fertility rate is about 2.4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/SP.DYN.LE00.IN\">Life expectancy<\/a> varies by more than a decade across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.censusindia.gov.in\/Vital_Statistics\/SRS_Life_Table\/2.Analysis_2010-14.pdf\">Indian states<\/a>. <\/strong>The average person in Assam could expect to live to be about 64 in 2011, while a resident of Kerala could expect to live to age 75. Overall, life expectancy in India was 68 years \u2013 the same as in Guyana during that time, and three years less than worldwide life expectancy of 71. The U.S. life expectancy in 2011 was 79 years, although it varied by state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/pressroom\/sosmap\/life_expectancy\/life_expectancy.htm\">in the U.S.
