(Lintao Zhang\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Biden administration is moving ahead with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-59556613\">diplomatic boycott<\/a> of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, citing human rights concerns regarding China\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-china-22278037\">treatment of Uyghurs<\/a> in the country\u2019s Xinjiang region. About three-in-ten Americans are not sure.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Confidence in President Joe Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2022\/01\/25\/views-of-joe-biden\/#confidence-in-biden-on-key-issues-facing-the-country\">handling of relations with China<\/a> has fallen over the past year. Just 39% of Americans today have confidence in Biden\u2019s ability to deal effectively with China, down from <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2021\/03\/04\/most-americans-support-tough-stance-toward-china-on-human-rights-economic-issues\/#partisans-sharply-divided-over-confidence-in-biden-to-deal-with-china\">53% in early 2021<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-310-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-12526\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/02\/01\/fast-facts-about-views-of-china-ahead-of-the-2022-beijing-olympics\/ft_2022-02-01_china_03-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"c7cfd7\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #c7cfd7;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2022\/01\/ft_2022.02.01_china_03.png?resize=480,1020 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2022\/01\/ft_2022.02.01_china_03.png?resize=620,1318 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"659\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2022\/01\/ft_2022.02.01_china_03.png?w=310\" alt=\"A bar chart showing that nearly all in publics surveyed say China disregards its people\u2019s freedoms\" class=\"wp-image-12526 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Most of the 17 global publics surveyed by the Center in 2021 had a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2021\/06\/30\/large-majorities-say-china-does-not-respect-the-personal-freedoms-of-its-people\/#unfavorable-views-of-china-remain-near-historic-highs-in-most-advanced-economies\">negative view of China<\/a>. Unfavorable views were highest in Japan, where nearly nine-in-ten adults (88%) said they had an unfavorable opinion. In many publics, unfavorable views of China were at or near historic highs in <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/database\/indicator\/24\">surveys going back to 2002<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Majorities in each of the international publics surveyed in 2021 said China <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2021\/06\/30\/large-majorities-say-china-does-not-respect-the-personal-freedoms-of-its-people\/#few-think-china-respects-the-personal-freedoms-of-its-people\">does not respect the personal freedoms of its people<\/a>. Again, the shares holding this opinion were at or near record highs in most places where the question had been asked before. Even in Singapore, where 64% of adults expressed a positive view of China, 60% said China does not respect the personal freedoms of its people.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Chinese President Xi Jinping <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2021\/06\/30\/large-majorities-say-china-does-not-respect-the-personal-freedoms-of-its-people\/#many-lack-faith-in-xis-handling-of-world-affairs\">drew negative reviews<\/a> from nearly every public surveyed in 2021. Majorities in every surveyed place but Singapore said they had no confidence in Xi to do the right thing regarding world affairs.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Asia-Pacific publics <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2021\/06\/30\/large-majorities-say-china-does-not-respect-the-personal-freedoms-of-its-people\/#no-consensus-on-prioritizing-human-rights-or-building-economic-ties-with-china\">were divided in 2021<\/a> over whether to prioritize economic relations with China or promote human rights there instead. Majorities in New Zealand and Australia said their country should try to promote human rights in China, even if it harms economic relations. In Singapore and South Korea, by contrast, majorities favored strengthening economic relations, even if it means not addressing human rights issues. Mentions of human rights came up in 20% of responses, and 3% specifically focused on the treatment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang.<\/li><li>Between 2020 and 2021, Americans in both parties expressed growing concern about <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2021\/03\/04\/most-americans-support-tough-stance-toward-china-on-human-rights-economic-issues\/pg_2021-03-04_us-views-china_0-17-1\/\">China\u2019s policies on human rights<\/a>. More than half of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (54%) said in 2021 that China\u2019s human rights policies would be a very serious problem for the U.S., up from 45% who said this in 2020. The share of Republicans and GOP leaners with this view also rose from 41% in 2020 to 49% a year later.<\/li><li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/interactives\/restrictions-on-religion-among-the-25-most-populous-countries-2007-2019\/\">level of government restrictions on religion<\/a> in China have been classified as \u201cvery high\u201d every year since 2007, according to an annual Center study of such restrictions around the world.
