(Chip Somodevilla\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/07\/10\/afghanistan-refugees-taliban-us\/9722816002\">Taliban takeover of Afghanistan<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-60555472\">war in Ukraine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/en-us\/displacement-in-central-america.html\">violence and turmoil in Central America<\/a>, and other conflicts around the world continue to force many people to cross international borders in search of safety and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Against this backdrop, around seven-in-ten Americans (72%) say taking in civilian refugees from countries where people are trying to escape violence and war should be a very or somewhat important goal for immigration policy in the United States. But only 28% say this should be a <em>very<\/em> important priority, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/09\/08\/republicans-and-democrats-have-different-top-priorities-for-u-s-immigration-policy\/\">Pew Research Center survey conducted last month<\/a>. And opinions on this question vary by party, race and ethnicity, and other factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(The survey did not define \u201crefugee\u201d for respondents, and the term can have specific legal meaning in certain contexts. For instance, while the United Nations has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/\">official refugee program<\/a>, some immigrants are granted asylum in the U.S. or receive protection from deportation under the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/10\/28\/biden-administration-widens-scope-of-temporary-protected-status-for-immigrants\/\">Temporary Protected Status<\/a>, or TPS, program. The analysis relies primarily on a survey of 7,647 U.S. adults, conducted from Aug. 1-14, 2022. The survey was conducted on the Center\u2019s nationally representative American Trends Panel, with an oversample of Hispanic adults from Ipsos\u2019 KnowledgePanel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White, Black and Asian adults include those who report being only one race and are not Hispanic. Hispanics are of any race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Respondents on both panels are recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. But women are somewhat more likely than men to say that taking in refugees who are trying to escape violence should be a very important goal for the U.S. (32% vs. 24%). And <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/science\/2022\/06\/14\/a-brief-statistical-portrait-of-u-s-hispanics\/\">Hispanic adults<\/a> (38%) \u2013 just under half of whom are immigrants themselves \u2013 are more likely than White (25%), Black (30%) or Asian Americans (26%) to voice this opinion. (It is worth noting that <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/04\/29\/key-facts-about-asian-americans\/\">Asian adults<\/a> in the U.S. are even more likely than Hispanic adults to be immigrants: 71% vs. 45%.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, Hispanics who were born outside the U.S. are more likely than U.S.-born Hispanics to say taking in civilian refugees should be a key U.S. policy goal (44% vs. 33%). Similarly, those who say their Hispanic identity is extremely or very important to how they think about themselves are much more likely to say this should be a very important policy goal than those who say their Hispanic identity is less important to them (45% vs. 27%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Differences by education and income on this question are modest, although Americans whose household income is under $30,000 per year are somewhat more likely than others to say taking in refugees should be a very important goal for U.S. immigration policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many religious leaders, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/daily-comment\/pope-francis-is-still-trying-to-call-attention-to-the-migrant-crisis\">including Pope Francis<\/a>, have long advocated for compassion for migrants and refugees, with some Christians citing <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-bible-says-to-welcome-refugees-120477\">biblical teachings<\/a> on the topic. This at least partly reflects the partisan composition of these religious groups, with White evangelicals <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2020\/06\/02\/democratic-edge-in-party-identification-narrows-slightly\/#religious-divides-in-partisanship\">much more likely to identify as Republicans<\/a> than as Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among U.S. Catholics, there also are differences by race and ethnicity: Hispanic Catholics are nearly twice as likely as White Catholics to say taking in refugees should be a very important policy goal for the U.S. (39% vs. 22%). This analysis does not look separately at members of non-Christian religions due to <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/08\/08\/why-pew-research-center-typically-cant-report-the-views-of-smaller-u-s-religious-groups\/\">sample size limitations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How Americans view accepting refugees from Afghanistan, Ukraine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other recent surveys, the Center asked Americans about their views on accepting refugees from two countries: Afghanistan and Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2021\/09\/23\/biden-administrations-handling-of-afghanistan-and-views-of-accepting-afghan-refugees-in-the-u-s\/\">September 2021 survey<\/a> conducted shortly after the U.S. military\u2019s withdrawal from Afghanistan \u2013 and the Taliban\u2019s subsequent takeover of the country \u2013 56% of U.S. adults said they strongly or somewhat favored the U.S. admitting thousands of refugees from Afghanistan, while 42% strongly or somewhat opposed the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was greater public support in the U.S. for accepting refugees from Ukraine, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2022\/03\/15\/public-expresses-mixed-views-of-u-s-response-to-russias-invasion-of-ukraine\">separate survey<\/a> conducted in March 2022, just after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/03\/25\/after-a-month-of-war-ukrainian-refugee-crisis-ranks-among-the-worlds-worst-in-recent-history\/\">refugee crisis it created<\/a> began.
