The roots of these inequities trace back to the central role <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/featured-stories\/racial-inequality-in-the-united-states#:~:text=Origins%20and%20Persistence%20of%20Racial%20Inequality%20in%20the%20United%20States\">slave labor<\/a> once played in the nation\u2019s economic system and the subsequent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/04\/16\/black-workers-face-promotion-and-wage-gaps-that-cost-the-economy-trillions.html\">segregation and discrimination<\/a> in labor markets. Today, most Black adults say the U.S. economic system does not treat Black people fairly. Four-in-ten Black adults held a very or somewhat positive view of capitalism in 2022, down from 57% in 2019. Views of capitalism also grew more negative among other racial and ethnic groups during this period, but the movement was particularly pronounced among Black Americans. In fact, the 2022 survey found that Black adults were the only racial or ethnic group more likely to view capitalism more negatively than positively, and also the only group more likely to view socialism more positively (52%) than negatively (42%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that survey, a quarter of Black adults said the phrase \u201cgives all people an equal opportunity to be successful\u201d describes capitalism extremely or very well. The survey includes 1,025 Black adults on Pew Research Center\u2019s nationally representative <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/our-methods\/u-s-surveys\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">American Trends Panel (ATP)<\/a>, and 2,887 Black adults on Ipsos\u2019 KnowledgePanel. This survey provided the data on Black Americans\u2019 assessments on economic inequality, the economic system, and whether they believe Black-owned businesses are an effective strategy for helping Black people move toward equality in the U.S. For more information on this study, read its <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/race-ethnicity\/2022\/08\/30\/black-voices-politics-methodology\/\">methodology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/black-americans-capitalism-topline.pdf\">questionnaire<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second survey was conducted among 7,647 adults, including 818 single-race, non-Hispanic Black adults from Aug. 1 to 14, 2022, to better understand how the public views capitalism. This survey provided the data on Black Americans\u2019 views of capitalism. The survey was conducted on the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel, with an oversample of Hispanic adults from Ipsos\u2019 KnowledgePanel. For more information on this study, read its <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2022\/09\/19\/socialism-capitalism-methodology\/\">methodology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/09\/PP_2022.09.19_socialism-capitalism_TOPLINE.pdf\">questionnaire<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third survey was conducted among 5,098 adults, including 696 single-race, non-Hispanic Black adults from Oct. 10 to 16, 2022. This survey provided the data on Black Americans\u2019 personal financial situation. For more information on this study, read its <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2022\/10\/20\/2022-midterms-economy-methodology\/\">methodology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/PP_2022.10.20_midterms-economy_TOPLINE.pdf\">questionnaire<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Respondents in each study were recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. Recruiting panelists by phone or mail ensures that nearly all U.S. Black adults have a chance of selection. This gives us confidence that any sample can represent the whole population (here is our <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2017\/05\/12\/methods-101-random-sampling\/\">Methods 101 explainer<\/a> on random sampling).<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier Pew Research Center surveys have also found broad criticisms of the U.S. economic system among Black Americans. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/race-ethnicity\/2022\/08\/30\/black-americans-are-pessimistic-about-their-position-in-u-s-society\/#:~:text=Fewer%20see%20other%20national%20issues%2C%20such%20as%20economic%20inequality%20or%20K%2D12%20education%2C%20as%20extremely%20big%20problems%20for%20Black%20Americans\">October 2021 survey<\/a>, roughly eight-in-ten Black adults (79%) said economic inequality is an extremely (54%) or very big problem (25%) for Black people living in the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-420-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-10469\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/03\/08\/black-americans-view-capitalism-more-negatively-than-positively-but-express-hope-in-black-businesses\/ft_2023-03-08_black-americans-capitalism_02-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"eae8e4\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #eae8e4;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/03\/ft_2023.03.08_black-americans-capitalism_02.png?resize=480,416 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/03\/ft_2023.03.08_black-americans-capitalism_02.png?resize=782,678 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/03\/ft_2023.03.08_black-americans-capitalism_02.png?resize=840,728 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"364\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/03\/ft_2023.03.08_black-americans-capitalism_02.png?w=420\" alt=\"A bar chart showing that the Vast majority of Black adults say the economic system needs to change in order to treat Black people fairly\" class=\"wp-image-10469 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the same survey, the vast majority of Black Americans said the U.S. economic system does not treat Black people fairly and that major changes to the system are needed. Roughly eight-in-ten Black adults (83%) said the economic system either needs to be completely rebuilt (37%) or needs major changes (46%). Another 11% said the system requires only minor changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Black Americans were pessimistic that such changes would occur in their lifetimes. About six-in-ten Black adults (62%) said in 2021 that these changes are a little or not at all likely to occur. A quarter said such changes are somewhat likely to occur, and just 12% said such changes are extremely or very likely to occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"most-black-americans-experience-economic-insecurity\">Most Black Americans experience economic insecurity<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many Black Americans have experienced economic insecurity in recent years due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/05\/12\/black-americans-say-coronavirus-has-hit-hard-financially-but-impact-varies-by-education-level-age\/\">financial challenges<\/a> brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/empsit.t02.htm\">unemployment rate<\/a> among Black workers has long been higher than that of other groups and remains so today, despite some improvement in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an October 2022 survey, roughly seven-in-ten Black adults (69%) said their personal finances were in only fair or poor shape, while just three-in-ten (31%) said their finances were in excellent or good shape. Fewer than four-in-ten (36%) said they had an <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/02\/23\/most-black-americans-say-they-can-meet-basic-needs-financially-but-many-still-experience-economic-insecurity\/\">emergency fund<\/a> to cover three months of expenses in case of sickness, job loss, economic downturn or other emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the same survey, about a fifth of Black adults (19%) said they had turned to family for financial assistance. Instead, Black adults were more likely to have <em>given<\/em> financial assistance to family members (39%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black women were more likely than Black men (43% vs. 34%) to have given money to family members, but both groups were still far more likely to have given than received financial assistance. Black adults with at least a bachelor\u2019s degree (48%) and those with some college experience and no bachelor\u2019s (45%) were more likely to have given money to family members than those with a high school diploma or less education (27%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"black-americans-say-supporting-black-businesses-will-help-achieve-equality\">Black Americans say supporting Black businesses will help achieve equality<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-10477\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/03\/08\/black-americans-view-capitalism-more-negatively-than-positively-but-express-hope-in-black-businesses\/ft_2023-03-08_black-americans-capitalism_04-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dae1e0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dae1e0;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/03\/ft_2023.03.08_black-americans-capitalism_04.png?resize=480,855 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/03\/ft_2023.03.08_black-americans-capitalism_04.png?resize=620,1104 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"552\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/03\/ft_2023.03.08_black-americans-capitalism_04.png?w=310\" alt=\"A bar chart showing that Most Black Americans say supporting Black businesses is an effective way to move toward equality\" class=\"wp-image-10477 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite having generally pessimistic views of capitalism, nearly six-in-ten Black adults (58%) said in the October 2021 survey that supporting Black-owned businesses is an extremely or very effective tactic for helping Black people move toward equality in the U.S. This view was widely shared among Black adults regardless of age and gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were differences by political party and education, though. Black Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents were more likely than Black Republicans and GOP leaners to say supporting Black businesses helps promote equality (63% vs. 41%). Those with at least a bachelor\u2019s degree (63%) were also more likely than those with a high school diploma or less education (53%) to say so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
