But many have never heard of Modi, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted March 20-26, 2023. For this analysis, we surveyed 3,576 U.S. adults from from March 20 to March 26, 2023. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Another 23% say India\u2019s influence has gotten stronger, while 11% say its influence has weakened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Men are more likely than women to say India\u2019s influence has been getting stronger, as are those with a bachelor\u2019s degree or more education when compared with those without a college degree. (Men in the U.S. were also more likely than women to answer the question.) U.S. adults who closely follow international news are also more likely than those who follow it less closely to see India as a growing power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to India\u2019s prime minister, a substantial share in the U.S. (40%) say they <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/04\/17\/americans-confident-in-zelenskyy-but-have-limited-familiarity-with-some-other-world-leaders\/\">have never heard of him<\/a>. Americans under 30 are particularly likely to say they do not know who Modi is (59%). In comparison, 28% of U.S. adults 65 and older say the same. Adults with less education are also more likely than those with higher levels of education to have never heard of Modi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-10037\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/06\/21\/americans-see-india-in-positive-light-but-few-have-confidence-in-modi\/sr_2023-06-21_modi_3-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dee0d0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dee0d0;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.21_modi_3.png?resize=480,595 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.21_modi_3.png?resize=620,768 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"384\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.21_modi_3.png?w=310\" alt=\"A bar chart showing that a majority of young Americans have never heard of India\u2019s Narendra Modi.\" class=\"wp-image-10037 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those who have heard of Modi, the prevailing sentiment is negative: 37% have little or no confidence in his ability to do the right thing regarding world affairs, compared with 21% who are confident in him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans are also largely unfamiliar with the Indian flag, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2022\/05\/25\/what-do-americans-know-about-international-affairs\/\">results of a 2022 Center quiz<\/a> that gauged Americans\u2019 knowledge of international affairs. When presented with a picture of India\u2019s flag, only 41% of Americans correctly identified the country it represents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans with a bachelor\u2019s degree or higher were more likely than those with less education to correctly attribute the flag to India, as were younger Americans when compared with their older counterparts.
