For this analysis, we surveyed 5,115 U.S. adults from June 5 to 11, 2023. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. About half (52%) say it is very important to require people seeking asylum in the U.S. to apply before they travel to the border. And in 2019, when Donald Trump was president, just a third said the government was doing a good job at the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both of those surveys asked about the \u201cincreased number\u201d of people seeking asylum, while the question in the Center\u2019s latest survey asks about the \u201clarge number\u201d of asylum seekers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just 35% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents and 11% of Republicans and Republican leaners currently rate the government\u2019s performance positively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"views-of-illegal-immigration-as-a-national-problem\">Views of illegal immigration as a national problem<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-420-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-9928\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/06\/21\/americans-remain-critical-of-governments-handling-of-situation-at-us-mexico-border\/sr_2023-06-21_border_3-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"eeecec\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #eeecec;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.21_border_3.png?resize=480,389 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.21_border_3.png?resize=782,633 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.21_border_3.png?resize=840,680 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"340\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.21_border_3.png?w=420\" alt=\"A line chart showing that about half of Americans now view illegal immigration as a very big problem in the country.\" class=\"wp-image-9928 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public perceptions of illegal immigration as a major national problem, which declined somewhat last year, have rebounded to 2021 levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans continue to be far more likely than Democrats (70% vs. 25%) to rate illegal immigration as a very big national problem. In both parties, somewhat larger shares now say illegal immigration is a major problem than did so last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked generally which party they agree with more on immigration policy, more Americans say they agree with policies from the Republican Party (41%) than the Democratic Party (31%). About a quarter (26%) say they don\u2019t agree with either party on this issue. And Republicans are twice as likely as Democrats to say it is important not to allow people to seek asylum in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: Here are the <a
