(Arun Nevader\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pew Research Center has been tracking <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/11\/15\/about-six-in-ten-americans-say-legalization-of-same-sex-marriage-is-good-for-society\/\">Americans\u2019 attitudes toward same-sex marriage<\/a>, gender identity and other LGBTQ+ issues for more than a decade. Some 17% of adults younger than 30 identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual, compared with 8% of those ages 30 to 49, 5% of those 50 to 64 and 2% of those 65 and older. The overview is based on data from Center surveys and analyses conducted from 2019 to 2022, including a 2019 analysis of 2017 survey data from Stanford University. Links to the methodology and questions used can be found in the text and at the bottom of this overview.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>More Americans identify as bisexual than as gay or lesbian.<\/strong> Among adults who are lesbian, gay or bisexual, 62% identify as bisexual, while 38% are gay or lesbian, according to the same 2022 survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among Americans who are lesbian, gay or bisexual, the vast majority of women say they are bisexual (79%) while the majority of men say they are gay (57%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adults younger than 50 who are lesbian, gay or bisexual are far more likely to identify as bisexual (69%) than as gay or lesbian (31%). The opposite is true among those ages 50 and older: 66% identify as gay or lesbian and 34% as bisexual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-group is-style-callout has-beige-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-challenges-of-measuring-lgbtq-identity\"><strong>The challenges of measuring LGBTQ+ identity<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Survey researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/nap.nationalacademies.org\/catalog\/26424\/measuring-sex-gender-identity-and-sexual-orientation\">face several&nbsp;challenges&nbsp;in measuring LGBTQ+ identity<\/a>. One is that there is no consensus about how best to measure sexual orientation. Some researchers rely on respondents self-identifying as LGBTQ+ (the technique used in surveys from Pew Research Center and Gallup), while others base their estimates on reports of sexual behavior or sexual attraction, which usually results in higher estimates. Other challenges include the stigmatization of identifying as LGBTQ+ in some cultures and respondents being unfamiliar with the terms used in surveys.<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bisexual adults are far less likely than gay or lesbian adults to be \u201cout\u201d to the important people in their life,&nbsp;<\/strong>according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2019\/06\/18\/bisexual-adults-are-far-less-likely-than-gay-men-and-lesbians-to-be-out-to-the-people-in-their-lives\/\">2019 Center analysis<\/a> of survey data from Stanford University. Only 19% of those who identify as bisexual say all or most of the important people in their life are aware of their sexual orientation. In contrast, 75% of gay or lesbian adults say the same. About one-quarter of bisexual adults (26%) say they are not \u201cout\u201d to <em>any<\/em> of the important people in their life, compared with 4% of gay or lesbian adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-420-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-9798\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/06\/23\/5-key-findings-about-lgbtq-americans\/sr_2023-06-23_lgbtq-americans_2-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"d5dfdd\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d5dfdd;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.23_LGBTQ-Americans_2.png?resize=480,374 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.23_LGBTQ-Americans_2.png?resize=782,609 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.23_LGBTQ-Americans_2.png?resize=840,654 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"327\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.23_LGBTQ-Americans_2.png?w=420\" alt=\"A bar chart that shows bisexual adults are far less likely to be \u2018out\u2019 to the important people in their life.\" class=\"wp-image-9798 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One factor that might contribute to bisexual adults being less likely to be \u201cout\u201d is that most (82%) bisexual men and women who are married or living with a partner are in a relationship with someone of the opposite gender, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2023\/06\/14\/support-for-blm-methodology\/\">new Center survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-200-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-9801\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/06\/23\/5-key-findings-about-lgbtq-americans\/sr_2023-06-23_lgbtq-americans_3-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e3e6e5\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e3e6e5;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.23_LGBTQ-Americans_3.png?resize=400,984 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"492\" width=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.23_LGBTQ-Americans_3.png?w=200\" alt=\"A bar chart showing that young adults are more likely than older adults to be transgender or nonbinary.\" class=\"wp-image-9801 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Some 1.6% of U.S. adults are transgender or nonbinary \u2013 that is, their gender differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.<\/strong>&nbsp;Adults under 30 are <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/06\/07\/about-5-of-young-adults-in-the-u-s-say-their-gender-is-different-from-their-sex-assigned-at-birth\/\">more likely than older adults to be trans or nonbinary<\/a>. Some 5.1% of adults younger than 30 are trans or nonbinary, including 2.0% who are trans men or trans women and 3.0% who are nonbinary \u2013 that is, they are neither a man nor a woman, or not strictly one or the other. (Due to rounding, subtotals may not add up to the total.) This compares with 1.6% of those ages 30 to 49 and 0.3% of those 50 and older who are trans or nonbinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2022\/06\/07\/the-experiences-challenges-and-hopes-of-transgender-and-nonbinary-u-s-adults\/\"><em>Essay: The experiences, challenges and hopes of transgender and nonbinary adults<\/em><\/a><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The share of U.S. adults who are transgender is particularly high among adults younger than 25. In this age group, 3.1% are trans men or trans women, compared with just 0.5% of those ages 25 to 29. There is no statistically significant difference between these two age groups in the share who are nonbinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>While a relatively small share of U.S. adults are transgender or nonbinary, many Americans say they know someone who is. <\/strong>More than four-in-ten U.S. adults (44%) say they <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/06\/07\/about-5-of-young-adults-in-the-u-s-say-their-gender-is-different-from-their-sex-assigned-at-birth\/\">personally know someone who is trans<\/a>, and 20% know someone who is nonbinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-9805\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/06\/23\/5-key-findings-about-lgbtq-americans\/sr_2023-06-23_lgbtq-americans_4-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"cfdbd8\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #cfdbd8;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.23_LGBTQ-Americans_4.png?resize=480,653 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.23_LGBTQ-Americans_4.png?resize=620,844 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"422\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.23_LGBTQ-Americans_4.png?w=310\" alt=\"A bar chart that shows more than four-in-ten U.S. adults report knowing a trans person.\" class=\"wp-image-9805 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About a quarter of U.S. adults (27%) say they have a trans friend, while 13% say they have a co-worker who is trans and 10% say they have a trans family member. About one-in-ten adults (9%) say they know a trans person who is younger than 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/07\/27\/rising-shares-of-u-s-adults-know-someone-who-is-transgender-or-goes-by-gender-neutral-pronouns\/\">2021 Center survey<\/a>&nbsp;found that 26% of U.S. adults personally knew someone who goes by gender-neutral pronouns such as \u201cthey\u201d instead of \u201che\u201d or \u201cshe,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2019\/09\/05\/gender-neutral-pronouns\/\">up from&nbsp;18% in 2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: This is an update of a post originally published June 13, 2017.
