It’s an official federal holiday, which means federal workers normally get a paid day off and there’s no mail delivery. (This year, many federal offices already are closed because of the ongoing government shutdown.) And observance at the state level varies widely.

<details class="wp-block-details is-style-plus-icon has-border-color has-ui-gray-light-border-color has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background has-sans-serif-font-family is-layout-flow wp-container-core-details-is-layout-61b01db2 wp-block-details-is-layout-flow" style="border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(0.875em, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2em) * 0.009), 0.88em);">
How we did this

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to assess the current status of Columbus Day, one of the most contentious and inconsistently celebrated holidays on the U.S. civic calendar.

We wanted to determine how many states and territories designate Columbus Day as a paid holiday for state workers, often considered the marker of an “official” holiday, versus a less formal commemoration. We also wanted to know how many states and territories have substituted some other day – most commonly Indigenous Peoples Day – for Columbus Day or added an alternative name.

Our primary sources were state administrative, personnel and human resources websites that list official state holidays, along with official compilations of state statutes. When those weren’t available or weren’t clear, we consulted other agency websites, news reports and reputable unofficial sources such as local chambers of commerce.

Some states spell Indigenous Peoples Day as “People’s” or “Peoples’.” In this analysis, we’ve standardized the spelling as “Peoples,” without the apostrophe, for simplicity and consistency.

Note: In recent years, the governors of California and American Samoa have routinely recognized the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples Day (as well as Columbus Day, in the case of American Samoa) via annual proclamation or memorandum. The holiday falls on the second Monday in October in all of those places except Washington state (where it’s fixed on Oct. 12) and Puerto Rico (where it’s commemorated on Nov. 19).

However, only 20 states and two territories make Columbus Day a paid holiday for state workers, meaning that state government offices will generally be closed. (In Vermont, collective bargaining agreements let state employees use Indigenous Peoples Day as a floating holiday.)

In 10 states, Columbus Day is designated as a “public holiday,” a “legal holiday” or something similar, but it’s not a paid day off for state workers. The state officially observes Columbus Day, but the governor can (and routinely does) move the observance to the Friday after Thanksgiving, to facilitate a four-day weekend.

Note: In recent years, the governors of California and American Samoa have routinely recognized the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples Day (as well as Columbus Day, in the case of American Samoa) via annual proclamation or memorandum. Six of those are alongside Columbus Day as a paid holiday, five are paid holidays on their own, and seven are unpaid days. Seven of these 17 states have additional commemorations of Native Americans or some aspect of Native history or culture, on dates other than the second Monday in October.

Many other states (18) do not have holidays honoring Native Americans on the second Monday in October, but they do celebrate such days, weeks or months at other times during the year. But of those states, only Maryland and Washington make their Native heritage days paid holidays – once again on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Oklahoma, which is home to 39 Native American tribal nations, commemorates Indigenous history and culture in several ways. That was largely due to lobbying by the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal and service organization. The holiday moved from Oct. 12 to the second Monday in
