(Joe Raedle\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guns are deeply ingrained in American society and the nation\u2019s political debates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees the right to bear arms, and about a third of U.S. adults say they personally own a gun. Unlike many demographic measures, there is not a definitive data source from the government or elsewhere on how many American adults own guns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pew Research Center survey conducted June 5-11, 2023, on the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel, used two separate questions to measure personal and household ownership. About a third of adults (32%) say they own a gun, while another 10% say they do not personally own a gun but someone else in their household does. These shares have changed little from surveys conducted in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/08\/04\/wide-differences-on-most-gun-policies-between-gun-owners-and-non-owners-but-also-some-agreement\/\">2021<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2017\/06\/22\/the-demographics-of-gun-ownership\/\">2017<\/a>. In each of those surveys, 30% reported they owned a gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These numbers are largely consistent with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/405260\/diminished-majority-supports-stricter-gun-laws.aspx\">rates of gun ownership reported by Gallup<\/a> and those reported by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gssdataexplorer.norc.org\/trends?category=Civil%20Liberties&amp;measure=owngun\">NORC\u2019s General Social Survey<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FBI maintains data on background checks on individuals attempting to purchase firearms in the United States. The FBI reported&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2021\/05\/30\/gun-sales-spike-across-the-united-states-as-country-reemerges-from-pandemic\">a surge in background checks<\/a>&nbsp;in 2020 and 2021, during the coronavirus pandemic, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/file-repository\/nics_firearm_checks_-_month_year.pdf\/view\">FBI statistics show that<\/a> the number of federal background checks declined in 2022 and 2023. This pattern seems to be continuing so far in 2024. As of June, fewer background checks have been conducted than at the same point in 2023, according to FBI statistics.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>four-in-ten U.S. adults say they live in a household with a gun, including 32% who say they personally own one,<\/strong>&nbsp;according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2023\/08\/16\/for-most-u-s-gun-owners-protection-is-the-main-reason-they-own-a-gun\/\">a Center survey conducted in June 2023<\/a>. These numbers are virtually unchanged since the last time we asked this question in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/07\/24\/key-facts-about-americans-and-guns\/sr_24-07-24_guns_6\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ece9e0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"1588\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/07\/SR_24.07.24_guns_6.png?resize=480,1229 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/07\/SR_24.07.24_guns_6.png?resize=620,1588 620w\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/07\/SR_24.07.24_guns_6.png?w=620\" alt=\"A bar chart showing that nearly a third of U.S. adults say they personally own a gun.\" class=\"wp-image-182797 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ece9e0; width:310px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are differences in gun ownership rates by political affiliation, gender, community type and other factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Party:<\/strong> 45% of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents say they personally own a gun, compared with 20% of Democrats and Democratic leaners.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gender:<\/strong> 40% of men say they own a gun, versus 25% of women.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Community type:<\/strong> 47% of adults living in rural areas report owning a firearm, as do smaller shares of those who live in suburbs (30%) or urban areas (20%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Race and ethnicity:<\/strong> 38% of White Americans own a gun, compared with smaller shares of Black (24%), Hispanic (20%) and Asian (10%) Americans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Personal protection tops the list of reasons gun owners give for having a firearm.<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><\/span>&nbsp;About seven-in-ten gun owners (72%) say protection is a major reason&nbsp;they own a gun. Considerably smaller shares say that a major reason they own a gun is for hunting (32%), for sport shooting (30%), as part of a gun collection (15%) or for their job (7%).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans\u2019 reasons behind gun ownership have changed only modestly since&nbsp;we fielded a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2017\/06\/22\/americas-complex-relationship-with-guns\/\">separate survey<\/a>&nbsp;about these topics in spring 2017. And while 81% of gun owners say owning a gun makes them feel safer, a narrower majority of nonowners in gun households (57%) say the same. Nonowners are also more likely than owners to worry about having a gun at home (27% vs. 12%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Feelings about gun ownership also differ by political affiliation, even among those who personally own a firearm. Gun owners, in turn, are more than twice as likely as nonowners to say the ease of obtaining a gun is about right (48% vs. 20%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are differences by party and community type on this question, too. While 86% of Democrats say it is too easy to obtain a gun legally, far fewer Republicans (34%) say the same. Overall, 51% of U.S. adults say it\u2019s more important to protect the right of Americans to own guns, while a similar share (48%) say controlling gun ownership is more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Views have shifted slightly since 2022, when we last asked this question. That year, 47% of adults prioritized protecting Americans\u2019 rights to own guns, while 52% said controlling gun ownership was more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Views on this topic differ sharply by party. Among adults who live in rural areas, 64% say gun ownership\u00a0increases safety, while among those in urban areas, 57% say it\u00a0<em>reduces<\/em>\u00a0safety. Those living in the suburbs are about evenly split in their views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>More than half of U.S. adults say an increase in the number of guns in the country is bad for society, <\/strong>according to the April 2024 survey. Some 54% say, generally, this is very or somewhat bad for society.
