But their views of Israel\u2019s government and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are more mixed, according to recent Pew Research Center surveys. Netanyahu was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-president-biden-invites-israeli-prime-minister-washington-2023-07-17\/\">recently invited<\/a>&nbsp;to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden in Washington, D.C., though no date has yet been set for the visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahead of a potential visit, here are five facts about Americans\u2019 views of Israel, its government and U.S.-Israel relations. This analysis is based on surveys from spring 2022 and spring 2023. All the findings in this post are based on Center surveys. Additional information about these studies and their methodologies are available at the links in the text.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Related:<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/08\/01\/israelis-have-polarized-views-of-netanyahu-reflecting-conflicts-many-see-in-israeli-society\/\"><em>Israelis have polarized views of Netanyahu, reflecting conflicts many see in Israeli society<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>More than half of Americans (55%) <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2022\/07\/11\/american-views-of-israel\/\">had a favorable view of Israel<\/a> in a 2022 survey, while 41% had an unfavorable view.<\/strong> Attitudes toward Israel varied by age, partisanship and religious affiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-8844\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/08\/21\/how-americans-view-israel-netanyahu-and-u-s-israel-relations-in-5-charts\/sr_2023-08-21_views-of-israel_1-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dadfda\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" decoding=\"async\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/08\/SR_2023.08.21_views-of-israel_1.png?resize=480,914 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/08\/SR_2023.08.21_views-of-israel_1.png?resize=620,1180 620w\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/08\/SR_2023.08.21_views-of-israel_1.png?w=620\" alt=\"A bar chart showing that Republicans and older Americans have more positive views of Israel.\" class=\"wp-image-8844 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dadfda; width:310px\" width=\"310\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Majorities of Americans ages 65 and older (69%) and ages 50 to 64 (60%) had a favorable opinion of Israel, compared with 49% of those ages 30 to 49 and 41% of those under 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans and Republican-leaning independents were more likely than Democrats and Democratic leaners to have a positive view of Israel (71% vs. 44%). Conservative Republicans were especially likely to express favor (75%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Majorities of Protestants (63%) and Catholics (58%) had favorable views of Israel, compared with around four-in-ten religiously unaffiliated Americans (42%). Among Protestants, White evangelicals (80%) had more positive views of Israel than White nonevangelicals (61%) or Black Protestants (43%). (Due to sample size limitations, we\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/08\/08\/why-pew-research-center-typically-cant-report-the-views-of-smaller-u-s-religious-groups\/\">unable to report the views of smaller U.S. religious groups<\/a>, like Jews and Muslims.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In 2022, Americans were <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2022\/05\/26\/modest-warming-in-u-s-views-on-israel-and-palestinians\/\">more likely to have a favorable opinion of Israel\u2019s people than of its government<\/a>.<\/strong> Two-thirds of Americans saw the Israeli people favorably. For example, Americans are <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/03\/04\/in-their-own-words-what-americans-think-about-china\/\">more critical of China&#8217;s government than of its people<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About a quarter of Americans (26%) said in a March 2023 survey that they had never heard of Netanyahu,<\/strong> <strong>but among those who had, more saw him negatively than positively.<\/strong> Some 42% of Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/04\/17\/americans-confident-in-zelenskyy-but-have-limited-familiarity-with-some-other-world-leaders\/\">said they had no confidence in Netanyahu<\/a> to do the right thing regarding world affairs, while 32% expressed confidence in him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Views of Netanyahu differed by political party and ideology. And college-educated Americans were more likely than those with less education to say the same, a difference driven by particularly positive assessments from those with a postgraduate degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-640-wide is-resized\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-8855\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/08\/21\/how-americans-view-israel-netanyahu-and-u-s-israel-relations-in-5-charts\/sr_2023-08-21_views-of-israel_4-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dbdfd3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" decoding=\"async\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/08\/SR_2023.08.21_views-of-israel_4.png?resize=480,929 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/08\/SR_2023.08.21_views-of-israel_4.png?resize=620,1200 620w\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/08\/SR_2023.08.21_views-of-israel_4.png?w=620\" alt=\"A bar chart that shows a large majority of Americans think bilateral relations with Israel are good.\" class=\"wp-image-8855 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dbdfd3; width:310px\" width=\"310\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A majority of Americans (62%) said in 2022 that they were not sure whether Biden was favoring Israelis or Palestinians too much.<\/strong> Overall, 16% said Biden was <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2022\/07\/11\/american-views-of-israel\/#most-americans-are-not-sure-how-biden-is-handling-the-israel-palestine-issue\">striking the right balance<\/a> between Israelis and Palestinians, and 13% said he was favoring Palestinians too much. A smaller share (8%) said Biden was favoring Israelis too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats and Republicans were about equally likely to say they were unsure about how Biden was handling the issue.
