For this analysis, we surveyed 5,140 adults from Jan. 16 to Jan. 21, 2024. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/our-methods\/u-s-surveys\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">Read more about the ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/SR_24.01.29_resolutions_topline.pdf\">questions used for the analysis<\/a> and its <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/01\/25\/economy-biden-methodology\/\">methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"young-adults-are-most-likely-to-make-new-year-s-resolutions\">Young adults are most likely to make New Year\u2019s resolutions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly half (49%) of adults ages 18 to 29 say they made at least one resolution this year, by far the largest share of any age group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About a third (31%) of those ages 30 to 49 say they made a resolution, while only about a fifth (21%) of adults 50 and older have done so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are only modest differences in who makes resolutions by race or ethnicity, gender or partisanship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"health-and-wealth-are-popular-topics-for-new-year-s-resolutions\">Health and wealth are popular topics for New Year\u2019s resolutions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across all age groups, sizable majorities of those who made resolutions this year say their goals focus on health, exercise or diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/01\/29\/new-years-resolutions-who-makes-them-and-why\/sr_24-01-29_resolutions_2-png\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8714\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f2f2f1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/01\/SR_24.01.29_resolutions_2.png?resize=480,507 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/01\/SR_24.01.29_resolutions_2.png?resize=782,827 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/01\/SR_24.01.29_resolutions_2.png?resize=840,888 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"677\" width=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/01\/SR_24.01.29_resolutions_2.png?w=640\" alt=\"A dot plot showing that a large majority of New Year\u2019s resolutions focus on health, exercise or diet.\" class=\"wp-image-8714 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f2f2f1; width:420px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, 79% say their resolutions concern health. Smaller but still sizable shares made resolutions about money or finances (61%), personal relationships (57%), hobbies or personal interests (55%), or work and career (49%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Younger Americans are more likely than older Americans to make resolutions about each of these topics, apart from health. This is especially the case for work and career: 65% of those under age 30 who made resolutions say they made one related to their work or career. Nearly as many (9%) say they couldn\u2019t think of a resolution to make, while 6% say they forgot to make one this year. Another 17% say they have another reason for making no resolutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: Here are the <a
