Today, 34% of U.S. adults say they have ever used ChatGPT, according to a Pew Research Center survey. That includes a 58% majority of adults under 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, 66% of Americans have not used the chatbot, including 20% who say they\u2019ve heard nothing about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Below, we explore the following questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/06\/25\/34-of-us-adults-have-used-chatgpt-about-double-the-share-in-2023\/#who-has-used-chatgpt\">Who has used ChatGPT?<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/06\/25\/34-of-us-adults-have-used-chatgpt-about-double-the-share-in-2023\/#how-have-americans-used-chatgpt\">How have Americans used ChatGPT?<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/06\/25\/34-of-us-adults-have-used-chatgpt-about-double-the-share-in-2023\/#how-aware-are-americans-of-chatgpt\">How aware are Americans of ChatGPT?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-plus-icon has-border-color has-ui-gray-light-border-color has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background has-sans-serif-font-family is-layout-flow wp-container-core-details-is-layout-61b01db2 wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(0.875em, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2em) * 0.009), 0.88em);\"><summary>How we did this<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand Americans\u2019 use of ChatGPT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this analysis, we surveyed 5,123 U.S. adults from Feb. 24 to March 2, 2025. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Interviews were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. Today, 58% of adults under 30 say they have used it, up from 43% in 2024 and 33% in 2023. While use is rising in older age groups as well, they remain less likely to have used ChatGPT:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>41% of adults ages 30 to 49 have used it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>25% of those 50 to 64 say the same.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10% of those 65 and older report ever using ChatGPT.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Differences by education<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adults with higher levels of formal education are more likely than those with less education to have used ChatGPT. We see growth in all three areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In two years, the share of employed adults who say they use ChatGPT for work has risen by 20 percentage points to 28%.<\/strong> That includes an 8-point increase since last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other Center research shows <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2025\/02\/25\/u-s-workers-are-more-worried-than-hopeful-about-future-ai-use-in-the-workplace\/\">workers have mixed feelings about its use<\/a> and expect it to have a major impact on jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking at other use cases for ChatGPT among U.S. adults overall:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>26% have used it for <strong>learning,<\/strong> up from 8% in March 2023.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>22% have used it for <strong>entertainment,<\/strong> up from 11%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Differences by age<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=263223\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f1f1f0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/06\/SR_25.06.24_chat-gpt_3.png?resize=480,475 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/06\/SR_25.06.24_chat-gpt_3.png?resize=782,775 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/06\/SR_25.06.24_chat-gpt_3.png?resize=840,832 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"634\" width=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/06\/SR_25.06.24_chat-gpt_3.png?w=640\" alt=\"Line charts showing that 46% of adults under 30 have used ChatGPT to learn; use for work, entertainment is also up since 2023.\" class=\"wp-image-263223 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f1f1f0; width:420px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use of ChatGPT for these reasons has risen since March 2023 across age groups. But younger adults are more likely than older adults to use ChatGPT in these ways. For example, 38% of employed adults ages 18 to 29 say they have used ChatGPT on the job. This compares with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>30% of those ages 30 to 49<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>18% of those 50 and older<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some 46% of all adults under 30 have used it to learn something new. And 42% have used it for entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, some older adults have used ChatGPT in these ways. About three-in-ten adults ages 30 to 49 say they\u2019ve ever used the chatbot for learning and entertainment. The share of adults 50 or older who say the same drops further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"differences-by-education\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Differences by education<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adults with higher levels of formal education also stand out in using ChatGPT at work. Now, most Americans \u2013 79% \u2013 have heard at least a little about it, including 34% who have heard <em>a lot<\/em> about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"differences-by-age\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Differences by age<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Majorities of adults of all ages have heard about the chatbot. But adults under 30 stand out for hearing <em>a lot<\/em> about it \u2013 53% say this, compared with 15% of those 65 and older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"differences-by-education\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Differences by education<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regardless of education level, majorities of adults have heard at least a little about ChatGPT. But about half of adults with a postgraduate degree say they\u2019ve heard <em>a lot<\/em> about it.
