Here is the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/07\/SR_25.07.08_marijuana_questionnaire.pdf\">question used in the January 2025 survey<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/07\/SR_25.07.08_marijuana_topline.pdf\">topline<\/a> and the survey <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2025\/02\/07\/views-of-trump-methodology\/\">methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The vast majority of Americans support legalizing marijuana in some way,<\/strong> according to a January-February 2025 Center survey. Around nine-in-ten U.S. adults say either that marijuana should be legal for medical <em>and<\/em> recreational use (54%) or that it should be legal for medical use only (33%). Another 12% say the drug should not be legal at all. By contrast, 65% of adults under 30 support legalization for both uses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Republicans: <\/strong>43% of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents favor legalization for both uses, compared with 66% of Democrats and Democratic leaners. Notably, moderate and liberal Republicans (56%) and conservative and moderate Democrats (57%) express similar levels of support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hispanic and Asian Americans: <\/strong>About four-in-ten Hispanic (42%) and Asian (39%) adults support legalizing marijuana for both uses. That compares with more than half of White (58%) and Black (57%) adults.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Support for marijuana legalization has increased dramatically in recent decades. <\/strong>In addition to asking specifically about medical and recreational use, both Pew Research Center and Gallup have asked Americans about legalizing marijuana use in a general way. (\u201cDo you think the use of marijuana should be legal, or not?\u201d) <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/514007\/grassroots-support-legalizing-marijuana-hits-record.aspx\">Gallup asked this question most recently<\/a>, in 2023. That\u2019s less than the 85% who say they have ever consumed alcohol and the 65% who have ever used tobacco products or nicotine vaping devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though a large share of Americans say they\u2019ve used marijuana in their lifetime, far fewer are current users, according to the same survey. Two-thirds of U.S. adults favored releasing people from prison who are being held for marijuana-related offenses only, including 41% who strongly favored this. And 61% supported removing or expunging marijuana-related offenses from people\u2019s criminal records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Younger adults, Democrats and Black Americans were especially likely to support these changes. Eight of these states only allow for the use of certain products that are low in THC \u2013 the main psychoactive substance in cannabis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Texas Gov. Greg Abbott recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/ajherrington\/2025\/06\/22\/texas-governor-signs-medical-marijuana-program-expansion-bill-into-law\/\">signed off on a major expansion<\/a> of the state\u2019s medical marijuana program, but the changes haven\u2019t taken effect yet. In Nebraska, voters approved an initiative in 2024 that legalized medical marijuana, but the state has <a href=\"https:\/\/nebraskaexaminer.com\/2025\/07\/01\/pillen-approves-nebraska-emergency-medical-cannabis-regulations-applications-now-sought\/\">not yet issued the necessary licenses<\/a> permitting businesses to handle the drug. (Both states are included in the count of 24 states that allow medical use.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two remaining states \u2013 Idaho and Kansas \u2013 do not have any type of access program for cannabis products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>As of 2024, more than half of Americans (54%) lived in a state where recreational marijuana use is legal, <\/strong>according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/02\/29\/most-americans-now-live-in-a-legal-marijuana-state-and-most-have-at-least-one-dispensary-in-their-county\/\">Center analysis<\/a> of data from the U.S. Census Bureau and other sources. This analysis looked at state-level legislation in all 50 states and D.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colorado and Washington in 2012 became the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/civil-and-criminal-justice\/cannabis-overview\">first states to pass legislation<\/a> legalizing recreational marijuana use. Delaware, Minnesota and Ohio legalized recreational use most recently, all in 2023. But efforts to legalize the drug for recreational use <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/marijuana-legalization-florida-dakota-nebraska-52ea8e44e753efc70f537bd4d764d361\">failed at the ballot box<\/a> in all three states that were considering the issue in 2024: Florida, North Dakota and South Dakota.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About eight-in-ten Americans (79%) live in a county with at least one cannabis dispensary, <\/strong>according to the 2024 analysis.
