But this is still a relatively new phenomenon, and it is important to study social media\u2019s role in the information environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asking about <em>how important<\/em> social media is for getting news, not just <em>how often<\/em> people get news there, adds to our understanding of this news source and how its role is changing over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"how-we-did-this\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How we did this<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We surveyed 3,488 U.S. adults from June 22 to 28, 2026. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">American Trends Panel<\/a>. In contrast, 41% of those 65 and older say social media is an important part of their news habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is in line with the fact that young adults are more likely than older adults to <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2025\/12\/03\/young-adults-and-the-future-of-news\/\">get news from social media<\/a> at all \u2013 and to trust what they see there. About half of adults under age 30 say they have <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/10\/29\/how-americans-trust-in-information-from-news-organizations-and-social-media-sites-has-changed-over-time\/\">at least
