href=\"https:\/\/blogs.worldbank.org\/en\/opendata\/understanding-country-income--world-bank-group-income-classifica\">middle-income nations<\/a> that collectively went from receiving more than $5 <em>billion<\/em> in aid in fiscal year 2024 to just over $500 <em>million<\/em> in fiscal 2026. Each country has seen aid from the U.S. cut by more than 75% since fiscal 2024. (Federal fiscal years start Oct. 1 and end Sept. 30.) We have <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/topic\/international-affairs\/global-image-of-countries\/us-global-image\/\">studied global views<\/a> of the United States and its handling of issues for more than two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn more <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/about\/\">about Pew Research Center<\/a> and our <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/international-surveys\/\">international surveys<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"how-did-we-do-this\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How did we do this?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We surveyed 20,888 adults across 16 countries: Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We interviewed participants from Feb. 8 to May 12, 2026. We designed the survey so we could talk about the views of the adult population in each country. Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/07\/SR_26.07.21_foriegn-aid-survey_topline.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/07\/SR_26.07.21_foriegn-aid-survey_topline.pdf\">survey questions we used for this analysis<\/a>, along with responses, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/methods\/feature\/international-methodology\/\">survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"middle-income-countries\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Middle-income countries<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We classified countries as either high or middle income based on <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.worldbank.org\/en\/opendata\/understanding-country-income--world-bank-group-income-classifica\">categories from the World Bank<\/a>&nbsp;that rely on per capita gross national income. We\u2019ve used this classification in other Center analyses, including when looking at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2024\/07\/09\/most-people-in-35-countries-say-china-has-a-large-impact-on-their-national-economy\/\">global views of China<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/06\/30\/dissatisfaction-with-democracy-remains-widespread-in-many-nations\/\">satisfaction with democracy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2023\/12\/06\/attitudes-on-an-interconnected-world\/\">globalization<\/a> and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/01\/28\/what-makes-someone-truly-belong-in-a-country-views-differ-on-importance-of-language-birthplace-and-other-factors\/\">national identity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, when people do give an opinion, <strong>they tend to think the U.S. ending most humanitarian aid programs will have a mostly negative impact on their country.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"--max-width__desktop: 310px; --max-width__tablet: ; --max-width__mobile: ;\" class=\"wp-block-group alignright has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained has-max-width-constraint\">\n<div style=\"--max-width__desktop: 310px; --max-width__tablet: ; --max-width__mobile: ;\" class=\"wp-block-group aligncenter is-style-callout has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-container-core-group-is-layout-2130f694 wp-block-group-is-layout-flow has-max-width-constraint\">\n<h2 id=\"what-do-americans-think-about-foreign-aid\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-small-font-size\">What do Americans think about foreign aid?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans supported giving some kinds of foreign aid more than others in <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2025\/05\/01\/international-engagement-and-support-for-foreign-aid\/#for-what-reasons-should-the-u-s-give-foreign-aid\">a 2025 survey<\/a>. For example, 83% said the U.S. should give foreign aid for the purpose of providing medicine and medical supplies to developing countries, while 34% said aid should support art and cultural activities in other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/07\/27\/americans-see-us-aid-to-developing-countries-as-more-beneficial-than-chinese-assistance\/\">a 2023 survey<\/a>, a third of Americans said U.S. foreign aid mostly benefits developing countries. Another 37% said it both benefits and harms these countries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Ghana, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, four-in-ten or more say the cuts will have a mostly negative impact. That\u2019s at least double the shares who view the change as positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People are also much more likely to say the cuts will have a negative than positive impact in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Kenya, Mexico, South Africa and Thailand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Pakistan and Turkey, relatively high shares say the cuts to humanitarian aid will not have much of an impact on their country. Roughly a third or more hold this view in both countries. Pakistan and Turkey are among the surveyed countries with more modest cuts to humanitarian aid from the U.S. in terms of total dollars, though they still lost 96% and 92%, respectively, between fiscal 2024 and 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a few countries, including Peru and Nigeria, the shares who say the impact will be positive and negative are similar. Peruvians are equally split (22% each).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Nigeria, 35% say the impact will be negative, similar to the 30% who say it will be positive. Notably, Christians in Nigeria are more likely than Muslims to say the cuts will have a negative impact (39% vs. 30%).
