We have studied Americans\u2019 views of the voting for decades.<br><br>Learn more&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about&nbsp;Pew Research Center<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/topic\/politics-policy\/\">politics research<\/a>. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"how-did-we-do-this\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How did we do this?&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the data for this analysis comes from a Center survey of 5,103 U.S. adults conducted April 20-26, 2026. Everyone who took this survey is part of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel. The survey reflects the views of all U.S. adults. Here are the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/06\/PP_2026.5.10_political-typology_questionnaire.pdf\">2026 survey questions<\/a> we used for this analysis, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/06\/PP_2026.5.10_political-typology_topline.pdf\">detailed responses&nbsp;<\/a>and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2026\/05\/11\/may-2026-national-problems-methodology\/\">survey&nbsp;methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This analysis also uses data from a Center survey conducted May 13-19, 2024. Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/07\/SR_24.07.08_voting-access_topline.pdf\">2024 survey questions<\/a>, along with responses, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/05\/23\/economy-national-problems-methodology\/\">survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"categorizing-state-voting-laws\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Categorizing state voting laws<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To categorize states by their voting laws, we relied on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/elections-and-campaigns\/table-1-states-with-no-excuse-absentee-voting\">data from the National Conference of State Legislatures<\/a>. Today, 34% of Republicans say this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast, Democrats\u2019 views are essentially unchanged over the past eight years. Smaller majorities of White (55%), Asian (63%) and Hispanic (62%) adults say the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"age\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Age<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adults under 50 are modestly more likely than those ages 50 and older to support no-excuse early or absentee voting (61% vs. 56%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"education\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Education<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two-thirds of Americans with a bachelor\u2019s degree or more education favor no-excuse early or absentee voting. This compares with 57% among those who have some college experience but no four-year degree, and 53% among those with a high school degree or less education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"party-and-ideology\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Party and ideology<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In both parties, views differ by ideology:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">Liberal Democrats are 15 percentage points more likely than conservative and moderate Democrats to back no-excuse early or absentee voting (90% vs. 75%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moderate and liberal Republicans are 17 points more likely than conservative Republicans to support this (44% vs. 27%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"would-making-it-easier-to-vote-affect-election-security\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Would making it easier to vote affect election security?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2024, we also asked Americans whether elections would be less secure if the rules were changed to make it easier to register and vote. That compared with 62% of Asian adults, 56% of Hispanic adults and 55% of White adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"age\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Age<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adults under 50 were modestly more likely than those ages 50 and older to say that changing these election rules would not make elections less secure (61% vs. 55%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"education\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Education<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans with at least a four-year college degree were more likely than those without a degree to say this (64% vs. 54%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"party-and-ideology\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Party and ideology<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around nine-in-ten liberal Democrats (91%) said that changing the rules to make it easier to vote would not make elections less secure. A smaller majority of conservative and moderate Democrats (70%) said the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, 69% of conservative Republicans and 54% of moderate and liberal Republicans said elections <em>would<\/em> be less secure if the rules were changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: This is an update of a post originally published on July 9, 2024.
