In the 1800s, <a href=\"https:\/\/history.state.gov\/milestones\/1866-1898\/chinese-immigration\">Chinese migrants<\/a> working in the gold rush and building railroads <a href=\"https:\/\/pluralism.org\/buddhists-in-the-american-west\">brought their Buddhist beliefs and practices<\/a> with them. Buddhism is among the major world religions we regularly study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more about Pew Research Center<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How did we do this?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This analysis is based on three Pew Research Center studies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2025\/06\/09\/how-the-global-religious-landscape-changed-from-2010-to-2020\/\">How the Global Religious Landscape Changed From 2010 to 2020<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/dataset\/2023-24-religious-landscape-study-rls-dataset\/\">2023-24 U.S. Religious Landscape Study<\/a> (RLS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/dataset\/2022-23-survey-of-asian-americans\/\">2022-23 Survey of Asian Americans<\/a> (SAA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the RLS, we surveyed Americans in English and Spanish. As a result, the RLS may have missed U.S. Buddhists who are not proficient in either of those languages. For the SAA, we surveyed Americans in English, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Hindi, Korean, Tagalog and Vietnamese. By combining information from both the RLS and SAA in this analysis, we can better represent <em>all<\/em> U.S. Buddhists. For details, go to each report\u2019s acknowledgements section.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There were around 4.4 million Buddhists in the U.S. in 2020. <\/strong>The number of Buddhists, including adults and children, rose by 22% between 2010 and 2020. Unlike estimates from the RLS and SAA, they include both adults and children.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Most U.S. Buddhists are immigrants, and most are Asian by race. <\/strong>An estimated 52% of U.S. Buddhist adults were born in Asia. Most of the rest are White (21%) or Hispanic (8%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2026\/03\/11\/buddhisms-recent-decline-in-east-asia\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2026\/03\/11\/buddhisms-recent-decline-in-east-asia\">Buddhism\u2019s Recent Decline in Asia<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Buddhist adults are much more likely than U.S. adults overall to live in the West (46% vs. 24%).<\/strong> In contrast, they\u2019re less likely than U.S. adults overall to live in the Midwest (9% vs. 21%) or South (29% vs. 38%). Roughly equal shares of Buddhists and all U.S. adults live in the Northeast (16% vs. 17%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There is a lot of turnover in the U.S. Buddhist population due to people moving into and out of the religion.&nbsp;<\/strong>By our estimates, 48% of current Buddhist adults <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2025\/03\/26\/religious-switching-into-and-out-of-buddhism\/#where-does-buddhism-have-the-largest-shares-of-new-entrants\">were not raised Buddhist<\/a> (in other words, they are converts). And 55% of U.S. adults who were raised Buddhist <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2025\/03\/26\/religious-switching-into-and-out-of-buddhism\/#what-percentage-of-people-raised-buddhist-are-still-buddhist\">no longer identify that way<\/a> (i.e., they are former Buddhists).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But because Buddhism is a small religion in the U.S., these figures translate into tiny percentages of<em>&nbsp;all&nbsp;<\/em>U.S. adults. Overall, 0.5% of all U.S. adults have converted to Buddhism, while 0.7% are former Buddhists. So there\u2019s an overall small net loss (0.2% of all U.S. adults) from switching in both directions. This means that immigration, not religious switching, has driven the growth in the number of Buddhists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2026\/03\/11\/why-is-buddhism-shrinking-worldwide\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2026\/03\/11\/why-is-buddhism-shrinking-worldwide\/\">Why is Buddhism shrinking worldwide?<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Around 3% of American adults consider themselves Buddhist \u201caside from religion,\u201d <\/strong>according to the RLS. This might mean they identify with Buddhism ethnically, culturally or because of their family background. In other words, the share of U.S. adults who connect with Buddhism broadly is much bigger than the share who say Buddhism is their religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2022-23 Survey of Asian Americans (SAA) asked Asian Americans a similar question and found that 21% consider themselves close to Buddhism for <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2023\/10\/11\/religion-among-asian-americans\/#feeling-close-to-a-religion-for-reasons-such-as-family-background-or-culture\">reasons aside from religion<\/a>.
