Far more (72%) rate conditions as only fair or poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attitudes vary widely by party. Around half of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (49%) say the economy is excellent or good \u2013 13 percentage points higher than in April 2025. Just 10% of Democrats and Democratic leaners say the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Views also differ by party when it comes to the effects of Trump\u2019s policies on the economy so far. A 57% majority of Republicans say Trump\u2019s policies have made the economy better, up 10 points since September. Only 3% of Democrats share this view. Democrats overwhelmingly say Trump\u2019s policies have made the economy worse (85%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, 28% of Americans say the president\u2019s policies have made economic conditions better, while 52% say they have made the economy worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"global-tariffs\">Global tariffs<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tariffs have been a key economic tool for Trump during his second term. But in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/news\/national-international\/supreme-court-ruling-trump-tariffs-authority\/4042018\/\">major ruling on Feb. 20<\/a>, the U.S. Supreme Court threw much of the White House\u2019s tariff policy into question. The president has since called for a new <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariff-truth-social-872c8f04112a8991d8aa6ae5005767b6\">15% global tariff<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our January survey \u2013 before the high court\u2019s ruling \u2013 Americans expressed more negative than positive views of Trump\u2019s tariffs. Six-in-ten <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2026\/02\/04\/americans-largely-disapprove-of-trumps-tariff-increases\/\">disapproved of tariff increases<\/a>, while 37% approved. Most say the same about the prices of food and consumer goods (66%) and housing (62%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than half of adults in each party say they are concerned about these issues. But <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2026\/02\/04\/a-year-into-trumps-second-term-americans-views-of-the-economy-remain-negative\/pp_2026-02-04_trump-economy_0-05\/\">Democrats express more concern<\/a> than Republicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/12\/10\/most-americans-say-government-has-a-responsibility-to-ensure-health-care-coverage\/\">separate survey conducted in November<\/a>, around two-thirds of Americans (66%) said the federal government has a responsibility to make sure all Americans have health care coverage. These overall declines are driven by decreases in support among Republicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/10\/16\/support-for-expanding-nuclear-power-is-up-in-both-parties-since-2020\/\">nuclear power<\/a> has seen an increase in support in recent years (now at 59% overall), with growing support among Republicans and Democrats alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"environmental-regulation\">Environmental regulation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the beginning of Trump\u2019s second term, the Environmental Protection Agency has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/epa-launches-biggest-deregulatory-action-us-history\">rolled back a number of regulations<\/a>. These actions include the recent repeal of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/regulations-emissions-vehicles-and-engines\/final-rule-rescission-greenhouse-gas-endangerment\">2009 greenhouse gas \u201cendangerment finding,\u201d<\/a> which had served as the basis for regulating emissions from vehicles, power plants and other sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slightly more than half (54%) of Americans say it\u2019s possible to cut back on environmental regulations and still protect air and water quality in the U.S., while 45% say it\u2019s not possible, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/science\/2025\/06\/05\/views-on-trump-administration-energy-policies-and-priorities\/#views-on-environmental-regulations\">according to the spring 2025 survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"role-in-venezuela\">Role in Venezuela<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a survey conducted soon after the U.S. military operation that <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/venezuela-us-explosions-caracas-ca712a67aaefc30b1831f5bf0b50665e\">ousted Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a>, 45% of Americans said the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2026\/02\/04\/americans-are-divided-on-next-steps-for-us-in-venezuela\/\">shouldn\u2019t be involved much or at all<\/a> in Venezuela\u2019s governance over the next several months.
