But whether people trust those around them also relates to how they think about interactions between <em>countries<\/em>, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Specifically,<\/strong> <strong>people who say most people <em>can <\/em>be trusted are more likely than those who say most people <em>can\u2019t <\/em>be trusted to support various cooperative foreign policies. <\/strong>They\u2019re also more likely to view certain international organizations positively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-plus-icon has-border-color has-ui-gray-light-border-color has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background has-sans-serif-font-family is-layout-flow wp-container-core-details-is-layout-61b01db2 wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(0.875em, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2em) * 0.009), 0.88em);\"><summary>How we did this<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This Pew Research Center analysis focuses on the relationship between social trust and opinions about foreign policy. We conducted these surveys:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Over the phone<\/strong> in Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Face-to-face<\/strong> in Argentina, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa and Turkey<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Using a mixed-mode probability-based online panel<\/strong> in Australia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the United States, we surveyed 9,544 U.S. adults from Feb. 3 to 9, 2025. We asked respondents if, generally speaking, most people can or can\u2019t be trusted. We then surveyed 3,605 U.S. adults from March 24 to 30, 2025, which included 3,430 adults who also participated in the February survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone who took part in the U.S. surveys is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Surveys were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. The surveys are weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. And the pattern persists when we statistically control for age, education, gender and people\u2019s political ideology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"social-trust-and-foreign-policy-attitudes-in-the-u-s\">Social trust and foreign policy attitudes in the U.S.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the U.S., 55% of adults say most people can be trusted, while 44% say most people <em>can\u2019t<\/em> be trusted. Democrats generally view international organizations favorably, while Republicans tend to be more negative or ambivalent toward them. Democrats (62%) are also roughly twice as likely as Republicans (32%) to say that it\u2019s best for the U.S. to be active in world affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Within <\/em>each party, trusters are generally more likely than distrusters to view international organizations positively and support the U.S. being active in world affairs. Among Democrats, 83% of trusters and 72% of distrusters support this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2025\/05\/01\/majorities-of-americans-support-several-but-not-all-types-of-foreign-aid\/\"><em>Majorities of Americans Support Several \u2013 But Not All \u2013 Types of Foreign Aid<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"social-trust-and-views-of-international-organizations-in-other-countries\">Social trust and views of international organizations in other countries<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many countries outside the U.S., those with higher levels of social trust are also more likely to view several international organizations positively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In most of the NATO member nations surveyed, those who say most people can be trusted view NATO more positively than those who say most people can\u2019t be trusted.
