The vast majority of U.S. adults (85%) say online scams and attacks are a problem on shopping sites and apps, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2025\/07\/31\/online-scams-and-attacks-in-america-today\/\">spring Pew Research Center survey<\/a>. Overall, 36% of U.S. adults say they\u2019ve <em>ever<\/em> bought an item online that either never arrived (31%) or was counterfeit (17%) and was not refunded. The survey was conducted from April 14 to 20, 2025. The survey\u2019s overall margin of error is plus or minus 1.3 percentage points. Here are the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/07\/PI_2025.07.31_Scams_Questionnaire.pdf\">questions used for this analysis<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/07\/PI_2025.07.31_Scams_TOPLINE.pdf\">topline<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2025\/07\/31\/scams-online-methodology\/\">survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data on reported online shopping fraud comes from the Federal Trade Commission\u2019s (FTC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/explore-data\">Consumer Sentinel Network Database<\/a>. The FTC has collected data about fraud, identity theft and other consumer protection issues since 1997. Even so, some demographic groups are more likely than others to say they\u2019ve experienced e-commerce scams while shopping online:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"><strong>Americans under 30<\/strong> (42%) are much more likely than those ages 65 and older (26%) to say they\u2019ve ever bought something online that was counterfeit or never delivered and they weren\u2019t reimbursed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hispanic (43%)<\/strong> <strong>and Black adults (41%)&nbsp;<\/strong>are more likely than White adults (33%) to say they\u2019ve experienced at least one of these online shopping scams. Roughly a third of Asian adults (35%) say the same.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Men and women are about equally likely to say they have fallen victim to e-commerce scams. That figure was up from the previous two years, but down from nearly 463,000 in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FTC uses a broader definition than our survey, describing online shopping fraud as reports of \u201cundisclosed costs, failure to deliver on time, non-delivery and refusal to honor a guarantee on purchases made online, and internet auctions.\u201d Its data is based on direct consumer reports and those filed through other organizations, as well as with federal, state, local and international law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Online shopping fraud was responsible for a reported $434.4 million in 2024, with victims facing a median loss of $130. That\u2019s up from 2021, when reported losses totaled $394.3 million, though consumers\u2019 median loss was higher that year ($150).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real figures may be even higher, however, since scams \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/04\/24\/what-the-data-says-about-crime-in-the-us\/#:~:text=What%20percentage%20of%20crimes%20are%20reported%20to%20police%3F%20What%20percentage%20are%20solved%3F\">like many other types of crime<\/a> \u2013 often go unreported. In fact, 74% of adults who say they\u2019ve ever lost money due to an online scam or attack, shopping-related or otherwise, said in our April survey that they did not report the incident to law enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: Here are the\u00a0<a
