(Spencer Platt\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early October, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/cdc-drops-universal-covid-vaccine-recommendations-suggests-separate\/story?id=126255300\">changed its COVID-19 vaccine guidelines<\/a>. And among those who have heard at least a little, 63% say the changes have had no influence on their decision whether to get an updated vaccine. Overall, 20% both have heard about the changes and say they\u2019ve influenced their decision on whether to get an updated vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-plus-icon has-border-color has-ui-gray-light-border-color has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background has-sans-serif-font-family is-layout-flow wp-container-core-details-is-layout-61b01db2 wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(0.875em, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2em) * 0.009), 0.88em);\"><summary>How we did this<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of a broader survey on health and vaccines, Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand how Americans view the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention&#8217;s revised COVID-19 vaccine recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We surveyed 5,111 U.S. adults from Oct. 20 to 26, 2025. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interviews were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. Another 13% say they already got one as of late October 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"differences-by-party-and-age\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Differences by party and age<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>An overwhelming majority of Republicans and Republican leaners (83%) say they don\u2019t want an updated vaccine.<\/strong> In contrast, 44% of Democrats and Democratic leaners say they want an updated vaccine, and 20% say they already got one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quarter of Americans ages 65 and older say they already got an updated vaccine \u2013 larger than the shares in younger age groups. Older Americans are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/covid\/hcp\/clinical-care\/underlying-conditions.html\">among the groups most at risk<\/a> for severe illness from COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet older Republicans and older Democrats have sharply different views on the vaccine. About four-in-ten Democrats ages 65 and older say they already got one, and 43% say they want to get one. Another 41% have heard a little, and only 15% have heard a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Younger Americans are more likely than older Americans to say they have heard nothing at all about the changes. Roughly half of adults under 50 say they haven\u2019t heard about them, compared with four-in-ten adults ages 50 to 64 and three-in-ten of those ages 65 and older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans are more likely than Democrats to say they haven\u2019t heard about the changes (49% vs. 36%). Another 24% say the changes have had a minor influence, and 12% say they\u2019ve had a major influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"views-by-demographic-group\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Views by demographic group<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Younger Americans are more likely than older people to say these changes have influenced their decision.<\/strong> Among adults under 30 who are familiar with the CDC\u2019s changes, about half say these changes have had at least a minor influence. One-in-ten say the changes make them more trusting. Still, about half say the changes have had no effect on their trust (33%) or they don\u2019t know enough to say (17%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to its COVID-19 vaccine guidelines, the CDC has recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/18\/health\/cdc-vaccine-panel-acip-mmrv-hepatitis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">changed other vaccine recommendations<\/a>, including some related to childhood vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Related:<\/em><\/strong><em> <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/science\/2025\/11\/18\/how-do-americans-view-childhood-vaccines-vaccine-research-and-policy\/\">How Do Americans View Childhood Vaccines, Vaccine Research and Policy?<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"trust-among-democrats-and-republicans\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trust among Democrats and Republicans<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among those who are familiar with the CDC\u2019s changes to its COVID-19 vaccine recommendations, Democrats are far more likely than Republicans to say these changes make them less trusting of other vaccine recommendations that come from the Trump administration (57% vs. 20%). Almost half of Republicans say the changes have had no effect on their trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats with at least a four-year college degree (69%) are more likely than those with some college or less education (48%) to say the changes make them less trusting of other Trump administration vaccine recommendations.
