(In this analysis, Republicans and Democrats include independents who lean toward each party.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans and Democrats similarly report feeling equally concerned and excited about the increased use of AI, while about one-in-ten in each group are more excited than concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This represents a notable shift from previous years.<\/strong> Since 2021, Republicans have been more likely than Democrats to say they feel more concerned than excited about AI\u2019s growing use. But the share of Republicans who say this has decreased 9 percentage points since 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Democrats\u2019 concerns over AI have steadily grown. The 51% of Democrats who are more concerned than excited about AI\u2019s increased use in daily life is up from 46% in 2023 and 31% in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/science\/2025\/09\/17\/how-americans-view-ai-and-its-impact-on-people-and-society\/\">have grown more concerned than excited<\/a> over the increased use of AI, with half saying this today, up from 37% in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-plus-icon has-border-color has-ui-gray-light-border-color has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background has-sans-serif-font-family is-layout-flow wp-container-core-details-is-layout-61b01db2 wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(0.875em, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2em) * 0.009), 0.88em);\"><summary>How we did this<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pew Research Center did this analysis to understand Americans\u2019 views of artificial intelligence (AI), including their opinions about effectively regulating its use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the opening section of this analysis, we surveyed 5,023 adults from June 9 to 15, 2025. The second section of the analysis is based on a survey of 3,605 adults from March 24 to 30, 2025. Everyone who took part in both surveys is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interviews were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. And here is the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/pg_2025.10.15_ai_topline.pdf\">topline questionnaire<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2025\/10\/15\/methodology-ai-global\/\">survey methodology<\/a> for the second section.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-americans-view-ai-regulation-by-the-u-s-and-other-entities\">How Americans view AI regulation by the U.S. and other entities<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While some advocates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/15\/us-federal-ai-regulation-is-on-the-way-sen-marsha-blackburn.html\">push for stricter rules on AI<\/a>, others have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/07\/23\/nx-s1-5213904\/trump-ai-regulations\">cautioned against stifling innovation<\/a>. Overall, 44% say they trust the U.S. a lot or some to regulate the use of AI effectively, while 47% have little to no trust in the U.S. to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2025\/10\/15\/how-people-around-the-world-view-ai\/\"><em>How People Around the World View AI<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey also asked Americans whether they trust the European Union and China to regulate AI properly. While Americans are divided in trusting the EU, far fewer trust China to regulate AI effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>How views of AI regulation differ by party<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Republicans are more likely than Democrats to trust the U.S. to regulate the use of AI effectively.<\/strong> Just over half of Republicans (54%) say they trust the U.S. to effectively regulate AI, compared with about a third of Democrats (36%). By contrast, more Democrats than Republicans <em>distrust<\/em> the U.S. to oversee this technology (56% vs. 38%).<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This pattern is reversed when it comes to the EU regulating AI.<\/strong> While 54% of Democrats say they trust the EU to regulate the use of AI effectively, a third of Republicans say the same. In other words, Democrats are more likely to trust the EU than their own country to regulate AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Republicans and Democrats alike are skeptical of China\u2019s ability to regulate AI<\/strong>. Across both parties, majorities say they <em>distrust<\/em> China\u2019s ability to oversee this technology properly.
