Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interviews were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. And there are wide partisan gaps over how much of a problem they think extremism from the left or the right is for the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Pew Research Center survey of 3,445 U.S. adults conducted Sept. 22-28 finds that, overall:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>85% say politically motivated violence is increasing. This includes nearly identical shares of Republicans and Republican leaners (86%) and Democrats and Democratic leaners (85%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Just over half of Americans see left-wing (53%) and right-wing (52%) extremism as major problems. Nearly as many (47%) say this about extremism from \u201cpeople without clear political views.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: The survey was conducted in the wake of the murder of conservative political commentator and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/charlie-kirk-conservative-activist-shot-546165a8151104e0938a5e085be1e8bd\">activist Charlie Kirk <\/a>on Sept. 10, and follows <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/minnesota-lawmakers-shot-funeral-119d4589c28205b4faec41f5c59a823c\">recent attacks<\/a> on both <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/timeline-trump-assassination-attempt-unfolded-rally-pennsylvania\/story?id=111933309\">Republican<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/04\/14\/nx-s1-5364554\/what-we-know-arson-josh-shapiros-residence\">Democratic<\/a> elected officials.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large majorities of both Republicans and Democrats say left-wing and right-wing extremism \u2013 as well as extremism from those without clear political views \u2013 are <em>at least minor problems<\/em> for the country. But partisans differ over whether they see each as a <em>major<\/em> problem:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>77% of Republicans say left-wing extremism is a major problem in the country. About one-in-ten people (11%) say the stark divides between the two parties contribute to politically motivated violence \u2013 with many mentioning that these divides seem to have grown in recent years. Democrats (13%) are slightly more likely than Republicans (9%) to mention polarization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default has-text-color has-link-color has-sans-serif-font-family has-small-font-size wp-elements-09d8f8540d849ea4ba97a9d48c897bff wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#9e7f2d;padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--80);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--80)\"><em>\u201cWe have a larger divide between the right and left than ever before, so we don\u2019t see each other as people but as the \u2018enemy.\u2019 When you see someone as an enemy, you can justify a lot of awful actions.\u201d (Republican, 30s)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default has-text-color has-link-color has-sans-serif-font-family has-small-font-size wp-elements-a1f12b7279879762c6940401e38c15c6 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#9e7f2d;padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--80);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--80)\"><em>\u201cThe country has, over time, become politically only two major parties with severely extreme and opposite views.\u201d (Independent, lean Democrat, 40s)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Unwillingness to engage with\/understand those with different views<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A similar share (10%) says a lack of understanding of people with different values or perspectives contributes to political violence in the country. Republicans (13%) are somewhat more likely than Democrats (9%) to point to this as a reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default has-text-color has-link-color has-sans-serif-font-family has-small-font-size wp-elements-73621ba3be5804a36c2d93628bc65414 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#9e7f2d;padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--80);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--80)\"><em>\u201cNo one knows how to discuss and have conversation with people of opposing values. Republicans (17%) are more likely than Democrats (9%) to mention any form of media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default has-text-color has-link-color has-sans-serif-font-family has-small-font-size
