For this analysis, we surveyed 5,085 U.S. adults from April 28 to May 4, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone who took part in the survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Interviews were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. And men are more likely than women to say they would be able to do some of the tasks we asked about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The largest gender gap concerns fixing a car\u2019s engine: 45% of men say they definitely or probably would be able to do this, compared with 14% of women.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Men are also much more likely than women to say they\u2019d be able to navigate using a compass outdoors (86% vs. 66%), weatherproof doors and windows (78% vs. 60%), and explain a high-pressure system on a weather map (47% vs. 30%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are only small gender differences in other tasks we asked about. For example, similar majorities of men and women say they would be able to calculate the amount to tip in their head or make sense of nutrition labels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, 51% of adults under 30 say they definitely or probably would be able to weatherproof doors and windows, compared with much larger shares of older adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, 77% of adults under 30 say they would be able to calculate a tip in their head, compared with nine-in-ten ages 50 and
