But how valuable do Americans think social media is for them <em>personally<\/em> to get involved in issues and express their political opinions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-plus-icon has-border-color has-ui-gray-light-border-color has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background has-sans-serif-font-family is-layout-flow wp-container-core-details-is-layout-61b01db2 wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(0.875em, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2em) * 0.009), 0.88em);\"><summary>How we did this<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand Americans\u2019 views of social media activism and its impact on the political environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this analysis, we surveyed 5,097 adults from Feb. 10 to 17, 2025. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Interviews were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. About four-in-ten of those 30 and older say the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are smaller age differences when it comes to social media\u2019s importance for expressing political opinions. By comparison, 45% of White adults say the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"by-party\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">By party<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among those who use social media, Democrats and Democratic leaners are more likely than Republicans and GOP leaners to say social media is important for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Getting them involved with political or social issues (47% of Democrats vs. 37% of Republicans)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finding others who share their views about important issues (54% vs. 47%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Having space to express their political opinions (38% vs. 32%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"views-of-social-medias-impact-on-political-discourse\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Views of social media\u2019s impact on political discourse &nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, <strong>Americans see both positive and negative impacts of social media on social and political discourse.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=274628\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dbe0e1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/09\/SR_25.09.16_online-activism_5.png?resize=480,523 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/09\/SR_25.09.16_online-activism_5.png?resize=782,853 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/09\/SR_25.09.16_online-activism_5.png?resize=840,916 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"698\" width=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/09\/SR_25.09.16_online-activism_5.png?w=640\" alt=\"A bar chart showing that majorities of Americans say social media highlights important issues and distracts from them.\" class=\"wp-image-274628 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dbe0e1; width:420px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We asked U.S. adults overall \u2013 not just social media users \u2013 how well certain statements describe social media. A large majority (79%) say the phrase \u201csocial media distracts people from issues that are truly important\u201d describes the platforms at least somewhat well. About three-quarters (76%) also say this about the statement \u201csocial media makes people think they are making a difference when they really aren\u2019t.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, notable shares also see positive impacts. About seven-in-ten say that social media highlights important issues and helps give a voice to underrepresented groups (69% each).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are some slight differences in these figures from when we first asked this question in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, 48% of U.S. adults currently say that social media makes it easier to hold people in power accountable, down from 56% in 2018. The shares who say social media helps give a voice to underrepresented groups and highlights important issues have increased slightly. However, 69% of both Democrats and Republicans say this now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Partisan gaps have narrowed for the two negative impacts we asked about as well. In 2018, 76% of Republicans and 67% of Democrats said that social media makes people think they are making a difference when they really aren\u2019t. Today, 75% of Republicans and 77% of Democrats say this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, in 2018, 74% of Democrats and 81% of Republicans said social media distracts from important issues. This is true for the two negative impacts we asked about as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, there are some differences by age. Adults under 30 are more likely than older adults to say social media has the three positive impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, 62% of those under 30 say social media makes it easier to hold powerful people accountable. Among those 65 and older, 36% say the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The age differences are more modest for the negative impacts than the positive ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
