However, this gap is closing, as <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2025\/06\/11\/us-image-declines-in-many-nations-amid-low-confidence-in-trump\/\">views of the U.S. have become more negative<\/a> while <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2025\/07\/15\/international-views-of-china-turn-slightly-more-positive\/\">views of China have turned more positive<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the sections below, we compare international public opinion of the two superpowers, their leaders, their economies and more. We published two separate reports \u2013 one about <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2025\/06\/11\/us-image-declines-in-many-nations-amid-low-confidence-in-trump\/\">views of the U.S.<\/a> and one about <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2025\/07\/15\/international-views-of-china-turn-slightly-more-positive\/\">views of China<\/a> \u2013 and this analysis examines views of the two global superpowers together. We publish this type of comparative analysis regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This analysis draws on nationally representative surveys of 28,333 adults across 24 countries conducted Jan. 8-April 26, 2025. This analysis does not include data from the United States, so medians may differ slightly from companion reports that do include U.S. data. All surveys were conducted over the phone in Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Surveys were conducted face-to-face in Argentina, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa and Turkey. This is especially the case in <strong>Israel,<\/strong> where 83% view the U.S. favorably, compared with 33% who take this stance on China. People in some countries that neighbor China \u2013 including <strong>South Korea,<\/strong> <strong>Japan<\/strong> and <strong>India <\/strong>\u2013 are also much more likely to see the U.S. than China favorably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In seven other countries, people have a more positive opinion of China than the U.S. These include the United States\u2019 southern neighbor, <strong>Mexico,<\/strong> where 56% of adults view China positively and 29% say the same of the U.S. China gets the better ratings in four other <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.worldbank.org\/en\/opendata\/world-bank-country-classifications-by-income-level-for-2024-2025\">middle-income countries<\/a> surveyed: South Africa, Turkey, Kenya and Indonesia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, in nine countries \u2013 including five in Europe \u2013 views of the U.S. and China are similar. The median percentage is the middle number in a list of all percentages sorted from highest to lowest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, about a third of&nbsp;<strong>Canadians<\/strong>&nbsp;today have a favorable view of the U.S. (34%) and China (34%). The gap is largest in <strong>Israel<\/strong> \u2013 where people are nearly eight times as likely to have confidence in Trump than Xi (69% vs. 9%). The gap is also sizable in some of China\u2019s neighboring countries, as well as in <strong>Hungary<\/strong> and <strong>Poland.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In six countries, more people have confidence in Xi than Trump. This gap is largest in <strong>Mexico, <\/strong>where 36% have confidence in the Chinese president and 8% have confidence in his American counterpart. <strong>Indonesians<\/strong> also stand out in this respect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In seven other countries \u2013 including the U.S.\u2019s neighbor to the north, Canada \u2013 there are no significant differences in views of the two leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-global-views-of-trump-and-xi-have-changed-over-time\">How global views of Trump and Xi have changed over time<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pew Research Center has long asked people around the world whether they have confidence in the U.S. president \u2013 and in other world leaders \u2013 to do the right thing regarding world affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2024, when we asked about then-President Joe Biden, confidence in the U.S. president has decreased in 13 countries and increased in six. And in the remaining four countries, people are about equally likely to see China and the U.S. as the world\u2019s top economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some countries, there has been a sizable increase since 2023 in the share of people who say China is the leading economic power \u2013 and a corresponding decrease in the share who say this about the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>France,<\/strong> for example, people were evenly divided in 2023 over whether China (43%) or the U.S. (43%) was the top economic power. Only in Australia, Indonesia and South Africa do people prioritize ties with China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, in nearly all high-income countries where we asked this question in both 2021 and 2025, views have moved in the direction of China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>Australia,<\/strong> for example, 52% of adults said in 2021 that it was more important for their country to have close economic ties with the U.S., while 39% prioritized close ties with China. This year, 42% of Australians favor close economic ties with the U.S. and a considerably larger share (53%) place more importance on ties with China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opposite pattern appears only in <strong>South Korea.<\/strong> The share of South Koreans who say it is more important to have close economic ties with the U.S. increased between 2021 and 2025, while the share prioritizing China decreased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"which-country-is-a-closer-ally-or-a-bigger-threat\">Which country is a closer ally \u2013 or a bigger threat?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also asked people to name their country\u2019s most important ally in an open-ended question. Adults in most countries surveyed are more likely to say that the U.S. is their country\u2019s most important ally than to say this about China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when it comes to which country is the greatest <em>threat <\/em>to their own, people in most European and Latin American countries surveyed also tend to name the U.S. over China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden <\/strong>and the<strong> United Kingdom, <\/strong>the U.S. is the second-most commonly named threat (after Russia). People in <strong>Spain <\/strong>name the U.S. as their top threat about as often as they name Russia. The U.S. is the most commonly cited threat in <strong>Argentina,<\/strong> <strong>Brazil,<\/strong> and <strong>Mexico.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>Australia,<\/strong> <strong>Japan <\/strong>and the <strong>U.S., <\/strong>by contrast, people name most frequently name China as the country posing the greatest threat to their
