An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/supreme-court\/supreme-court-sidesteps-major-ruling-religious-public-charter-schools-rcna204111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evenly divided Supreme Court<\/a>&nbsp;recently upheld a ban on what would have been the nation\u2019s first religious public charter school, in Oklahoma. Texas lawmakers are considering requiring public schools to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2025\/05\/27\/ten-commandments-texas-public-schools\/\">display the Ten Commandments<\/a> in classrooms, while a federal appeals court struck down a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/louisiana-ten-commandments-schools-federal-court-80d31b705fccbbbe3eeeb3cda5f64ec3?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=share\">similar law in Louisiana<\/a> earlier this month. And legal battles persist over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/education\/2025\/04\/29\/tampa-christian-schools-pregame-prayer-case-will-go-supreme-court\/\">prayer at school sporting events<\/a> and making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/05\/22\/texas-school-prayer-period-house-approval\/\">time for prayer<\/a> during the school day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-plus-icon has-border-color has-ui-gray-light-border-color has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background has-sans-serif-font-family is-layout-flow wp-container-core-details-is-layout-61b01db2 wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(0.875em, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2em) * 0.009), 0.88em);\"><summary>How we did this<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This Pew Research Center analysis explores Americans\u2019 views by state on questions about teacher-led prayers in public schools. The data comes from the Center\u2019s 2023-24 Religious Landscape Study (RLS), a nationally representative survey of 36,908 U.S. adults. It was conducted in English and Spanish from July 17, 2023, to March 4, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The RLS is the largest single survey that the Center conducts and was designed to be representative of&nbsp;all 50 states and the District of Columbia, as well as 34 large metro areas. The survey of nearly 37,000 U.S. adults was large enough to break out results in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, although the margins of error for the state-level estimates are much larger than for the survey\u2019s national estimates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jump to: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/06\/23\/support-for-christian-prayer-in-us-public-schools-varies-widely-by-state\/#states-where-more-adults-favor-than-oppose-allowing-christian-prayer-in-schools\">States where more adults favor than oppose allowing Christian prayer in schools<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/06\/23\/support-for-christian-prayer-in-us-public-schools-varies-widely-by-state\/#states-where-more-adults-oppose-than-favor-allowing-christian-prayer-in-schools\">States where more adults oppose than favor allowing Christian prayer in schools<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/06\/23\/support-for-christian-prayer-in-us-public-schools-varies-widely-by-state\/#states-where-the-public-is-divided-over-allowing-christian-prayer-in-schools\">States where the public is divided over allowing Christian prayer in schools<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/06\/23\/support-for-christian-prayer-in-us-public-schools-varies-widely-by-state\/#christian-prayer-vs-generic-prayer\">Christian prayer vs. generic prayer<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"states-where-more-adults-favor-than-oppose-allowing-christian-prayer-in-schools\">States where more adults favor than oppose allowing Christian prayer in schools<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 22 states, more adults say they <em>favor<\/em> allowing teachers to lead their classes in prayers that refer to Jesus than say they oppose it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Support for Christian prayer in schools is particularly high in parts of the South, including <strong>Mississippi<\/strong> (81%), <strong>Alabama<\/strong> (75%), <strong>Arkansas<\/strong> (75%), <strong>Louisiana<\/strong> (74%) and <strong>South Carolina<\/strong> (71%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other Southern states, such as <strong>Oklahoma<\/strong>, <strong>Kentucky<\/strong> and <strong>West Virginia<\/strong>, are also among the states with the most support of Christian prayer in schools (67% in each state favor it).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In eight Midwestern states, there is more support than opposition for allowing teacher-led Christian prayers: <strong>South Dakota<\/strong> (65%), <strong>North Dakota<\/strong> (61%), <strong>Indiana<\/strong> (58%), <strong>Kansas<\/strong> (58%), <strong>Missouri<\/strong> (57%), <strong>Nebraska<\/strong> (56%), <strong>Ohio<\/strong> (53%) and <strong>Michigan<\/strong> (53%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"states-where-more-adults-oppose-than-favor-allowing-christian-prayer-in-schools\">States where more adults oppose than favor allowing Christian prayer in schools<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 12 states and the District of Columbia, more adults say they <em>oppose<\/em> allowing teachers to lead their classes in prayers that refer to Jesus than say they favor it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three of these states are on the West Coast: <strong>Oregon<\/strong> (65%), <strong>Washington<\/strong> (61%) and <strong>California<\/strong> (56%). Six are in the Northeast: <strong>Vermont<\/strong> (64%), <strong>Connecticut<\/strong> (60%), <strong>New Hampshire<\/strong> (60%), <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> (58%), <strong>New York<\/strong> (53%) and <strong>New Jersey<\/strong> (53%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also more opposition than support for allowing teacher-led Christian prayers in <strong>Minnesota<\/strong> (59%), <strong>Colorado<\/strong> (58%) and <strong>Illinois<\/strong> (54%). And the <strong>District of Columbia<\/strong> (69%) ranks among the parts of the country with the highest levels of opposition to allowing teachers to lead their classes in prayers that refer to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"states-where-the-public-is-divided-over-allowing-christian-prayer-in-schools\">States where the public is divided over allowing Christian prayer in schools<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 16 remaining states are divided, with no statistically significant differences in the shares who favor or oppose allowing teachers to lead their students in prayers that mention Jesus. For example, 56% of adults in <strong>Delaware<\/strong> and around half in <strong>Virginia<\/strong> (52%), <strong>Pennsylvania <\/strong>(51%) and <strong>Maryland<\/strong> (50%) <em>favor<\/em> allowing Christian prayer. Once the survey\u2019s margins of error are accounted for, support for teacher-led Christian prayer in these states is not significantly different from opposition. The 2023-24 Religious Landscape Study also asked a separate question about \u201callowing teachers to lead their classes in prayers that refer to God but not to any specific religion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nationwide, <strong>a slightly larger share of Americans say they favor allowing teacher-led prayers referencing God (57%) than favor allowing teacher-led prayers specifically referencing Jesus (52%).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the state-level patterns are similar on both questions. For example, the same Southern states still top the list, with nearly identical levels of support for allowing teachers to lead students in prayers referring to God versus prayers referring to Jesus. This is the case in <strong>Mississippi<\/strong> (77% support for prayers to God vs. 81% for prayers to Jesus), <strong>Arkansas<\/strong> (76% vs. 75%), <strong>South<\/strong> <strong>Carolina<\/strong> (74% vs. 71%), <strong>Alabama<\/strong> (74% vs. 75%) and <strong>Louisiana<\/strong> (74% for both).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-640-wide
