It celebrates the lives and contributions of LGBTQ Americans and commemorates the anniversary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.loc.gov\/lgbtq-studies\/stonewall-era\">Stonewall Uprising<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some key findings on how LGBTQ adults view Pride, based on a Pew Research Center survey conducted in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=238723\"><img data-dominant-color=\"d4ddd9\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"852\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/05\/SR_25.05.29_pride-month_1.png?resize=400,852 400w\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/05\/SR_25.05.29_pride-month_1.png?w=408\" alt=\"A pie chart showing that most LGBTQ adults have taken part in Pride Month events.\" class=\"wp-image-238723 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d4ddd9; width:200px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>66% of LGBTQ adults say they have participated in LGBTQ-related events during Pride Month at least once in their lives. This includes 49% who say they\u2019ve participated more than once.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>68% say all or most companies that promote Pride are motivated to do so by business interests. Smaller shares say companies promote Pride because they feel pressured (35%) or because of a genuine desire to celebrate LGBTQ people (16%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the survey explored LGBTQ adults\u2019 knowledge of LGBTQ history in the U.S. and where they learned about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also asked non-LGBTQ adults about Pride Month in a February survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Related:<\/em><\/strong> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2025\/05\/29\/the-experiences-of-lgbtq-americans-today\/\">The Experiences of LGBTQ Americans Today<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-plus-icon has-border-color has-ui-gray-light-border-color has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background has-sans-serif-font-family is-layout-flow wp-container-core-details-is-layout-61b01db2 wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(0.875em, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2em) * 0.009), 0.88em);\"><summary>How we did this<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of a series this year focusing on LGBTQ Americans, Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand how lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer U.S. adults view Pride Month and how much they know about LGBTQ history. This project builds on previous research exploring the experiences of <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2013\/06\/13\/a-survey-of-lgbt-americans\/\">gay, lesbian and bisexual<\/a> people, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2022\/06\/07\/the-experiences-challenges-and-hopes-of-transgender-and-nonbinary-u-s-adults\/\">transgender and nonbinary<\/a> people, in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this analysis, references to gay, lesbian or bisexual adults exclude those who are transgender. Transgender adults are of any sexual orientation (28% of trans adults we surveyed identify as gay or lesbian, 53% &nbsp;are bisexual, and 8% are straight). Queer adults are included in the total and in the gay or lesbian, bisexual, and trans totals if they indicated they also identify with these terms. The number of queer respondents who do not identify as gay or lesbian, bisexual, or trans is too small to analyze separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this study, we surveyed 3,959 LGBTQ adults from Jan. 8 to Jan. 19, 2025. The sample for this survey includes respondents from three different sources: Pew Research Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), SSRS\u2019 Opinion Panel (OP), and Ipsos\u2019 Knowledge Panel (KP). The ATP is a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey also included oversamples of transgender adults and gay, lesbian or bisexual adults who are married or living with a partner from Ipsos\u2019 KnowledgePanel. Like the ATP, the Opinion Panel and KnowledgePanel are probability-based online survey web panels recruited primarily through national, random sampling of residential addresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This analysis also includes data from a Center survey of 4,740 U.S. adults who are not LGBTQ and were not sampled to participate in the January survey of LGBTQ adults. The data was collected as part of a larger survey of U.S. adults conducted from Feb. 10 to Feb. 17, 2025. The respondents are members of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interviews were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. The January survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. LGBTQ adult population, and the February survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/05\/SR_25.05.29_pride-month_questionnaire.pdf\">questions used for this analysis<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/05\/SR_25.05.29_pride-month_topline.pdf\">toplines<\/a>, and the methodologies for the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2025\/05\/29\/lgbtq-experiences-methodology\/\">survey of LGBTQ adults<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/05\/ST_2025.05.07_George-Floyd_methodology.pdf\">survey of non-LGBTQ adults<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pew Research Center is a subsidiary of The Pew Charitable Trusts, its primary funder. About two-thirds of transgender adults (68%) say they have participated in Pride events. (In this analysis, gay, lesbian and bisexual adults exclude those who are transgender; transgender adults are of any sexual orientation.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shares of LGBTQ adults who say they\u2019ve participated in Pride events also vary by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Education:<\/strong> 77% of those with a bachelor\u2019s degree or more education have participated, compared with 60% of those with some college or less education.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Partisanship:<\/strong> 71% of LGBTQ Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents have participated, compared with 47% of LGBTQ Republicans and Republican leaners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"non-lgbtq-adults\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Non-LGBTQ adults<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adults who are not LGBTQ are less likely to say they have participated in LGBTQ-related Pride events. Still, 16% of non-LGBTQ adults say they have participated, including 9% who say they\u2019ve done this more than once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certain groups of non-LGBTQ adults are more likely than others to say they\u2019ve participated in Pride:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Those younger than 50 (23% vs. 9% of those ages 50 and older)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those with at least a bachelor\u2019s degree (22% vs. 14% with some college or less education)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Democrats (27% vs. 7% of Republicans)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"why-do-americans-think-companies-promote-pride\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do Americans think companies promote Pride?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"lgbtq-adults\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">LGBTQ adults<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many companies sell Pride-themed merchandise and express support for the LGBTQ community in other ways throughout June, although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/pride-month-campaigns-2024-major-brands-scaled-back-why-that-matters\/\">some have scaled back in recent years<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We asked about three separate reasons companies might promote Pride Month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=238720\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dbded4\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/05\/SR_25.05.29_pride-month_3.png?resize=480,464 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/05\/SR_25.05.29_pride-month_3.png?resize=782,756 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/05\/SR_25.05.29_pride-month_3.png?resize=840,812 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"619\" width=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/05\/SR_25.05.29_pride-month_3.png?w=640\" alt=\"A horizontal stacked bar chart showing that relatively few LGBTQ adults say all or most companies that promote Pride are motivated by a genuine desire to celebrate LGBTQ people.\" class=\"wp-image-238720 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dbded4; width:420px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A majority of LGBTQ adults (68%) say all or most companies that promote Pride Month do this because they think it will help their business.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About a third (35%) say these companies promote Pride because they feel pressure to support LGBTQ people.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fewer (16%) say all or most of them have a genuine desire to celebrate LGBTQ people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LGBTQ adults under 30 are the most skeptical that companies promote Pride because of a genuine desire to celebrate LGBTQ people. In this age group, 51% say <em>only a few or no companies<\/em> support Pride for this reason. This compares with 43% of LGBTQ adults in their 30s, 39% of those in their 40s, and 30% of those ages 50 and older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These views also differ by party. LGBTQ Democrats are more likely than their Republican counterparts to say <em>all or most<\/em> <em>companies<\/em> that promote Pride do so because they think it will be good for their business (71% vs. 59%). In turn, LGBTQ Republicans are more likely than LGBTQ Democrats to say these companies feel pressure to express support (43% vs. 34%). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"non-lgbtq-adults\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Non-LGBTQ adults<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, non-LGBTQ adults are skeptical of the motivations of companies that promote Pride. And 45% say these companies feel pressure to support LGBTQ people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among those who are not LGBTQ, Republicans are far more likely than Democrats to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>All or most<\/em> <em>companies<\/em> that promote Pride feel pressure to do so (61% vs. 30%)<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Only a few or none <\/em>of these companies have a genuine desire to celebrate LGBTQ people (63% vs. 37%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"how-much-do-lgbtq-adults-know-about-lgbtq-history-in-the-u-s\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much do LGBTQ adults know about LGBTQ history in the U.S.?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=238722\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dae2e0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"1318\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/05\/SR_25.05.29_pride-month_5.png?resize=480,1020 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/05\/SR_25.05.29_pride-month_5.png?resize=620,1318 620w\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/05\/SR_25.05.29_pride-month_5.png?w=620\" alt=\"A bar chart showing that LGBTQ adults ages 60 and older are more likely than younger counterparts \nto know a lot about LGBTQ history.\" class=\"wp-image-238722 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dae2e0; width:310px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About a third of LGBTQ adults (32%) say they\u2019re extremely or very informed about the history of LGBTQ people in the U.S. Another 44% say they are somewhat informed, and 24% say they are a little or not at all informed. However, there are several differences by LGBTQ group and other demographic characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gay or lesbian (40%) and transgender (47%) adults are more likely than bisexual adults (23%) to say they are extremely or very informed about LGBTQ history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LGBTQ adults ages 60 and older also stand out: 46% say they are extremely or very informed, compared with about a third or fewer in younger age groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also differences by education. LGBTQ adults with a postgraduate degree are more likely than those with a bachelor\u2019s degree only to say they are extremely or very informed (41% vs. 34%). Instead, the most common source is the internet or social media: 60% say they learned a great deal or a fair amount from these sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About half (51%) say they learned a lot from other LGBTQ people they know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smaller shares say they learned a lot about LGBTQ history from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Television or movies (38%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Books (36%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>School (8%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LGBTQ adults under 40 are more likely than their older counterparts to say they learned a lot about LGBTQ history from the internet or social media (66% vs. 50% of those ages 40 and older).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LGBTQ adults with a postgraduate degree are particularly likely to say they learned a great deal or fair amount about this history from books.
