With President Donald Trump in the White House and the GOP in control of Congress, 83% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say it is extremely or very important that Democratic elected officials push hard against Trump\u2019s policies when they disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How we did this<\/summary>\n

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand how the public wants President Donald Trump and Democratic elected officials to work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this analysis, we surveyed 3,589 U.S. adults from April 7 to April 13, 2025. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Interviews were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other factors. A far smaller share (44%) say it\u2019s important that party officials find areas of common ground where they can work with Trump, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted April 7-13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
