(Traditionally, the first such address given during a president\u2019s term is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/04\/28\/politics\/not-a-state-of-the-union-address\/index.html\">not called a \u201cState of the Union\u201d address<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The findings in this analysis primarily come from a survey of 5,086 U.S. adults conducted Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 2025. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. Around a quarter of U.S. adults (24%) say the economy is in excellent or good shape, while far more say it\u2019s doing only fair (45%) or poor (31%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These overall evaluations are essentially unchanged over the past year. But Republicans\u2019 views of the economy have improved since the fall, while the opposite is true for Democrats. (Throughout this analysis, references to Republicans and Democrats include independents who lean toward each party.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Majorities of Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2025\/02\/20\/americans-continue-to-view-several-economic-issues-as-top-national-problems\/\">see several economic issues as very big problems<\/a> in the country today. Two-thirds of adults say the affordability of health care is a very big problem \u2013 a share that\u2019s risen 10 percentage points since last spring. Another 19% say prices will stay about the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expectations are also more negative than positive when it comes to the affordability of housing (42% vs. 29%) and health care (45% vs. 20%) in the coming year. There is again a partisan divide in these assessments, with <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/02\/11\/republicans-think-economy-will-improve-over-the-next-year-democrats-expect-it-to-get-worse\/sr_25-02-11_views-of-economy_4\/\">Democrats much more likely than Republicans<\/a> to say affordability will get worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stark-partisan-divides-on-immigration-policy\">Stark partisan divides on immigration policy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans and Democrats are deeply divided on several of the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2025\/02\/20\/americans-continue-to-view-several-economic-issues-as-top-national-problems\/#partisans-views-of-the-nation-s-problems\">24 national problems asked about in our recent survey<\/a>, but illegal immigration stands out: 73% of Republicans see it as a very big problem in the country today, while 23% of Democrats say the same. The partisan gap on this question has ranged between 40 and 50 points for <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2025\/02\/20\/americans-continue-to-view-several-economic-issues-as-top-national-problems\/pp_2025-2-20_national-problems_00-06\/\">most of the last decade<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Broad GOP support for Trump\u2019s immigration agend<\/em>a<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=201687\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f0efef\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/SR_25.03.03_sotu_3.png?resize=480,430 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/SR_25.03.03_sotu_3.png?resize=782,700 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/SR_25.03.03_sotu_3.png?resize=840,752 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"573\" width=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/SR_25.03.03_sotu_3.png?w=640\" alt=\"A dot plot showing wide divisions between Republicans and Democrats on the Trump administration's immigration efforts.\" class=\"wp-image-201687 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f0efef; width:420px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediately after returning to office in January, Trump signed executive orders declaring a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/declaring-a-national-emergency-at-the-southern-border-of-the-united-states\/\">national emergency<\/a> at the U.S.-Mexico border and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-biden-deportations-border-immigration-bcd2737e6f9b482ec500238c6caa4f35\">ramping up efforts to restrict immigration<\/a> and deport people living in the country illegally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, more than half of U.S. adults <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/02\/07\/what-americans-think-about-trumps-immigration-actions-early-in-his-second-term\/\">support increasing deportations<\/a> (59%) and growing the military\u2019s presence at the southern border (58%). Fewer than half support cutting federal funds for cities and states that don\u2019t help federal deportation efforts (47%) and suspending asylum applications from people seeking to live in the U.S. (44%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans are far more likely than Democrats to approve of several of the administration\u2019s immigration policy actions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increasing deportations (86% vs. 33%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sending more military forces to the border (88% vs. 30%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cutting federal funding for cities and states if they don\u2019t help deportation efforts (80% vs. 16%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suspending asylum applications (72% vs. 18%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Birthright citizenship order seen more negatively than positively<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another of Trump\u2019s executive orders aims to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/protecting-the-meaning-and-value-of-american-citizenship\/\">redefine birthright citizenship<\/a>, arguing that children born in the United States are only citizens if at least one parent is a citizen or legal permanent resident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, 56% of U.S. adults <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/02\/21\/trumps-executive-order-on-birthright-citizenship-draws-more-disapproval-than-approval\/\">disapprove of this executive order<\/a>, while 43% approve. Strong disapproval of the order (40%) is more widespread than strong approval (23%). They\u2019re also more likely than Democrats to say that helping Ukraine hurts U.S. national security (40% vs. 21%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Views of U.S. involvement in NATO also vary by party. Fewer than half of Republicans (47%) now say the U.S. benefits a great deal or fair amount from its membership in NATO \u2013 the lowest share measured since we started asking this question in 2021. By comparison, 82% of Democrats say the U.S. benefits from being in the international military alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"confidence-in-federal-civil-servants-also-largely-splits-along-party-lines\">Confidence in federal civil servants also largely splits along party lines<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the Trump administration moves swiftly to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-elon-musk-federal-workers-layoffs-d295d4bb2cdd5023c27d9cb03754e81b\">reduce the size of the federal workforce<\/a>, a slim majority of Americans (55%) express a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/02\/13\/confidence-in-federal-civil-servants-remains-far-lower-among-republicans-than-democrats\/\">great deal or fair amount of confidence<\/a> in federal career employees to act in the best interests of the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As has long been the case, views of these workers vary by party. Just 38% of Republicans have confidence in federal civil servants, compared with 72% of Democrats. These include orders banning trans women and girls <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-transgender-athletes-3606411fc12efffec95a893351624e1b\">from women\u2019s sports<\/a> and ending federal funding for health care related to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-transgender-transition-executive-order-301e4130233b411311978f66f455f1c4\">gender transitions for youth<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/02\/26\/americans-have-grown-more-supportive-of-restrictions-for-trans-people-in-recent-years\/\">A Center survey from mid-February<\/a> found that majorities of U.S. adults favor or strongly favor laws that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Require trans athletes to compete on teams that match their sex assigned at birth (66%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ban health care professionals from providing care related to gender transitions for minors (56%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These shares are up 8 points and 10 points, respectively, since 2022.
