New Horizons launched in 2006 and has traveled 3 billion miles to get to within 7,800 miles of the icy dwarf planet. The spacecraft is expected to check in with mission control later today and send back photos and information about Pluto.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\">This major milestone in space travel is a reminder of the special place that America\u2019s space program has in the public imagination and in scientific circles. Here are five key takeaways from Pew Research Center and other surveys about Americans\u2019 views toward space exploration:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2011\/07\/05\/majority-sees-u-s-leadership-in-space-as-essential\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"a9b8c2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a9b8c2;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"292\" height=\"338\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/07\/space1.png?resize=292,338 292w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-30243 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/07\/space1.png\" alt=\"U.S. Continuing to be World Leader in pace Exploration Is...\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Americans are supportive of the space program and space exploration<\/strong>. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2011\/07\/05\/majority-sees-u-s-leadership-in-space-as-essential\/http:\/www.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2011\/07\/05\/majority-sees-u-s-leadership-in-space-as-essential\/\">2011 Pew Research survey<\/a>, 58% of Americans said it is essential that the U.S. be a world leader in space exploration.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Some 38% said they think the space program contributes \u201ca lot\u201d to scientific advancements that Americans can use, and another 36% said the program contributes \u201csome\u201d to such advancements. \u00a0Most also said that the space program contributes a lot (34%) or some (34%) to America\u2019s national pride and patriotism. More broadly, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2009\/07\/09\/section-1-public-views-of-science-and-scientists\/\">in a 2009 Pew Research survey<\/a>, 74% said that space exploration does more good than harm, while only 17% said it does more harm than good.<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Americans were also supportive of specific aspects of the U.S. space program, such as the space shuttle program and the International Space Station. About two-thirds (64%) of the public said the space station has been a good investment for the country, while 29% said it was not a good investment, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2015\/07\/01\/chapter-8-attitudes-on-space-issues\/#u-s-investment-in-the-space-station\">according to our 2014 survey<\/a>. And <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2011\/07\/05\/majority-sees-u-s-leadership-in-space-as-essential\/\">the 2011<\/a> poll found that 55% of Americans said that the space shuttle program had been a good investment for the country, compared with 36% who said it was not a good investment.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/07\/14\/5-facts-about-americans-views-on-space-exploration\/space-and-such\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-271804\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e2e4e3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e2e4e3;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"313\" height=\"274\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/07\/space-and-such.png?resize=313,274 313w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-30262 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/07\/space-and-such.png\" alt=\"Scientists and Public Supportive of Space Station\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Americans and scientists agree on the value of space exploration, but\u00a0<\/strong><strong>disagree on the importance of human astronauts.<\/strong> As was the case with the general public, a solid majority (68%) of members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2015\/01\/29\/chapter-3-attitudes-and-beliefs-on-science-and-technology-topics\/#views-about-the-u-s-space-program\">surveyed by Pew Research<\/a> said the space station was a good investment.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\">But differences emerged on the question of whether human astronauts are essential to the future of the U.S. space program. A majority of Americans (59%) considered the use of human astronauts in the future to be essential, while 39% viewed astronauts as not essential. AAAS members were closely divided, with 47% saying that human astronauts are essential and 52% saying they are not.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2015\/01\/22\/most-view-the-cdc-favorably-vas-image-slips\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ebe3ca\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ebe3ca;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"309\" height=\"427\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/07\/pluto-4.png?resize=309,427 309w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-30237 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/07\/pluto-4.png\" alt=\"High Favorable Ratings for CDC, NASA, DOD; Mixed Ratings for IRS\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Americans have a favorable opinion of NASA.<\/strong> In a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2015\/01\/22\/most-view-the-cdc-favorably-vas-image-slips\/\">January 2015<\/a> survey, 68% of Americans expressed a favorable view of NASA, similar to that of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention among the eight federal agencies we asked about. (Seven-in-ten had a favorable view of the CDC.) This was in line with similar favorable ratings for NASA in the past.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Americans are optimistic about the future of space exploration. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2010\/06\/22\/section-1-science-technology-and-the-environment\/\">A 2010 survey conducted by Pew Research and Smithsonian magazine<\/a> found that 63% of Americans expected astronauts to land on Mars, and 53% believed that ordinary people would be able to travel in space by 2050. Some Americans are even more hopeful about the possibilities of space exploration. One-third of Americans predicted in a 2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2014\/04\/17\/us-views-of-technology-and-the-future\/\">Pew Research\/Smithsonian survey<\/a> that humans will have long-term space colonies in the next 50 years.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/07\/14\/5-facts-about-americans-views-on-space-exploration\/pluto-5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-271792\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e4e6e6\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e4e6e6;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"313\" height=\"294\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/07\/pluto-5.png?resize=313,294 313w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-30255 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/07\/pluto-5.png\" alt=\"High Expectations for Space Exploration in 2010\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although they value the program and are proud of its achievements, <strong>Americans are reluctant to pay more for space exploration. <\/strong>Just 23% of Americans said the U.S. spends too little on space exploration, according the <a href=\"http:\/\/www3.norc.org\/Gss+website\/\">National Opinion Research Center\u2019s General Social Survey<\/a> (GSS) conducted last year. About four-in-ten (42%) said the U.S. spends about the right amount, and 25% said the U.S. spends too much on space exploration. Americans were more likely to say the government is spending too little on areas such as education (70%) and health (57%).<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If all went according to
