One month in, it has sought to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/musk-wants-delete-entire-agencies-us-government-2025-02-13\/\">eliminate departments and agencies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-federal-workers-layoffs-doge-406752da1614755b8fabe9c94e0c71a8\">shrink the federal workforce<\/a>, particularly through the work of its Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These actions are taking place against a backdrop of long-standing <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/06\/24\/public-trust-in-government-1958-2024\/\">low public trust in the federal government<\/a> and critiques of the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2022\/06\/06\/2-public-views-about-the-federal-government\/\">responsiveness and efficiency<\/a>. Additional information about these surveys, including their field dates, sample sizes and other methodological details, can be found by following the links in the text.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The public has long been divided \u2013 largely along partisan lines \u2013 over how large a role government should have.<\/strong> In April 2024, a narrow majority of the public (53%) said government should do more to solve problems, while a somewhat smaller share (46%) said government is doing too many things better left to businesses and individuals. As of last spring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>76% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents said the government should do more to solve problems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>71% of Republicans and Republican leaners said government is doing too much.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most Democrats have also long said they favor <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/06\/24\/governments-scope-efficiency-and-role-in-regulating-business\/\">a bigger government that provides more services<\/a>, while most Republicans have tended to favor a smaller government that provides fewer services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Critiques of government waste and inefficiency are not new. <\/strong>For much of the last 30 years, Americans have been more likely to see government as wasteful and inefficient than to say it often does a better job than people give it credit for. For example, in a 2022 survey, 85% of Democrats and 74% of Republicans said the federal government should play a major role in responding to natural disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there are several areas where Republicans express substantially less support than Democrats. Very few people in either party \u2013 7% of Republicans and 4% of Democrats \u2013 favored phasing out the government program entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About three-in-ten Republicans (29%) said Social Security should be <em>expanded<\/em> to cover more people and offer greater benefits. Roughly half of Democrats (51%) said this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Democrats are far more likely than Republicans to express confidence in career government employees. <\/strong>Overall, a slim majority of Americans (55%) express a great deal or fair amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/02\/13\/confidence-in-federal-civil-servants-remains-far-lower-among-republicans-than-democrats\/\">confidence in career employees of the federal government<\/a> in a survey conducted this year. But the already substantial partisan gap on this question has widened in recent years: 72% of Democrats and 38% of Republicans now express a great deal or a fair amount of confidence in career federal employees.
