Amy Butler as senior pastor of New York City\u2019s influential and historic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theriversidechurchny.org\/\">Riverside Church<\/a>, as well as the installation of a number of other women at high-profile American congregations, has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.religionnews.com\/2014\/08\/29\/cracks-stained-glass-ceiling-women-reach-prominent-pulpits\/\">brought new attention<\/a> to the theological divide among religious groups concerning the ordination of women.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/09\/FT_14.09.08_WomenOrdain.png\"><img data-dominant-color=\"efeeed\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #efeeed;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"310\" height=\"509\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/09\/FT_14.09.08_WomenOrdain.png?resize=310,509 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-29956 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/09\/FT_14.09.08_WomenOrdain.png\" alt=\"where women can lead churches, ministries\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While many major religious \u00a0denominations in the United States now allow women to pastor churches and synagogues, only 11% of American congregations were led by women in 2012, according to press reports of an upcoming <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soc.duke.edu\/natcong\/\">National Congregations Study<\/a> survey. That figure hasn\u2019t changed since 1998. Many of the nation\u2019s largest denominations, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/john_paul_ii\/apost_letters\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_apl_15081988_mulieris-dignitatem_en.html\">Roman Catholics<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbc.net\/faqs.asp\">Southern Baptists<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mormon.org\/faq\/women-in-the-church\">Mormons (Latter-day Saints)<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/oca.org\/questions\/priesthoodmonasticism\/ordination-of-women\">Orthodox Church in America<\/a>, do not ordain women or allow them to lead congregations.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other religious groups have taken small steps in the direction of female ordination. For instance, while there currently are no women in the U.S. serving as Orthodox Jewish rabbis, a number of women <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/jewish-life-and-religion\/134369\/orthodox-women-ordained\">recently were ordained by one Orthodox seminary<\/a> as <em>maharats<\/em>, or female leaders of Jewish law, spirituality and Torah \u2013 but they will not be given the title of rabbi.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A number of American churches, such as the United Church of Christ (whose members were once called Congregationalists) and the Universalists (who eventually merged with the Unitarians) started ordaining women in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century. But it wasn\u2019t until the decades following World War II that many of the larger and more prominent denominations began to allow women into leadership roles.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1956, the <a href=\"http:\/\/mtmitchellumc.wordpress.com\/2013\/03\/06\/short-bio-maud-jensen\/\">United Methodist Church<\/a> and a part of what would become the Presbyterian Church USA ordained their first women ministers. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20100830005955\/en\/Forty-Years-ELCA-Pastor-Elizabeth-Platz-Serves#.VAmzsfnIYjM\">Evangelical Lutheran Church in America<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/jwa.org\/encyclopedia\/article\/priesand-sally-jane\">Reform Judaism<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.episcopalarchives.org\/cgi-bin\/ENS\/ENSpress_release.pl?pr_number=74200\">Episcopal Church<\/a> followed suit in the early 1970s.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, women have ascended to a number of high-profile jobs in American churches. Many, including the Episcopal Church and the United Methodist Church, now allow women to be bishops and hold other top leadership positions. In 2006, for instance, the Episcopal Church, for the first time, elected a woman, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/06\/19\/us\/19bishop.html?_r=0\">Katherine Jefferts Schori, to be its presiding bishop<\/a>, the church\u2019s highest office.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Only 11% of American congregations were led by women in 2012, according to press reports of an upcoming National Congregations Study survey.
