Musk is a deeply polarizing figure, with Republicans largely viewing him favorably and Democrats largely unfavorably. About four-in-ten (42%) express a favorable view, including 11% who are <em>very<\/em> favorable, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2025\/02\/07\/views-of-trump-administration-congressional-leadership\/\">Pew Research Center survey<\/a> conducted Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Musk is the head of companies such as Tesla and X (formerly Twitter). He is also currently a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tylerroush\/2025\/02\/05\/white-house-says-elon-musk-trusted-to-claim-his-own-conflicts-of-interest-as-special-government-employee-heres-what-that-means\/\">\u201cspecial government employee\u201d<\/a> of the Trump administration, leading the Department of Government Efficiency as it seeks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-doge-elon-musk-findings-trump\/\">cut federal spending<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-plus-icon has-border-color has-ui-gray-light-border-color has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background has-sans-serif-font-family is-layout-flow wp-container-core-details-is-layout-61b01db2 wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(0.875em, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2em) * 0.009), 0.88em);\"><summary>How we did this<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand Americans\u2019 views of Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this analysis, we surveyed 5,086 adults from Jan. 27 to Feb. 2, 2025. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Surveys were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other factors.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/our-methods\/u-s-surveys\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">Read more about the ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/PP_2024.7.2_views-of-trump_questionnaire.pdf\">questions used for this report<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/PP_2024.7.2_views-of-trump_topline.pdf\">topline<\/a>&nbsp;and the survey&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2025\/02\/07\/views-of-trump-methodology\">methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Two-thirds of Americans have an unfavorable view of Zuckerberg.<\/strong> This includes 26% who are <em>very<\/em> unfavorable toward him. Another quarter view him favorably, including just 2% who see him <em>very <\/em>favorably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zuckerburg is the chairman and CEO of Meta, a company that owns social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram. Zuckerberg hasn\u2019t been immune to political debates, including over his recent decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/social-media\/meta-ends-fact-checking-program-community-notes-x-rcna186468\">end fact-checking on his platforms<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few Americans are <em>unfamiliar<\/em> with either of these tech leaders. Fewer than one-in-ten say they\u2019ve never heard of Musk (3%) or Zuckerberg (6%). This compares with 12% of Democrats and Democratic leaners.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Far more Democrats than Republicans have an <em>unfavorable<\/em> view of Musk (85% vs. 24%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By comparison, <strong>majorities in both parties have an unfavorable view of Zuckerberg<\/strong>, <strong>though Democrats are more likely than Republicans to see him negatively:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Six-in-ten Republicans and around three-quarters of Democrats (76%) \u2013 including 87% of liberal Democrats \u2013 have an unfavorable view.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smaller shares in both parties hold a favorable one (34% of Republicans and 17% of Democrats).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"views-of-musk-zuckerberg-by-age\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Views of Musk, Zuckerberg by age<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The public\u2019s views of Musk and Zuckerberg also modestly vary by age, with younger adults somewhat more negative of both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>67% of adults under 30 hold an unfavorable view of Musk, compared with about half of those ages 30 to 49 (53%) and those 50 and older (49%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seven-in-ten adults under 30 and 72% of those ages 30 to 49 have an unfavorable opinion of Zuckerberg. This compares with 62% of those 50 and older.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Age differences are particularly pronounced among Republicans when it comes to views of Musk. About half (47%) of Republicans under 30 express an unfavorable view of Musk. By comparison, 23% of those ages 30 to 49 and even fewer of those 50 and older (16%) see him negatively.
