The majority of adults who describe themselves as unaffiliated \u2014 about 12% of the adult population overall \u2014 is made up of people who simply describe their religion as \u201cnothing in particular.\u201d About half of these people (6.3% of the overall adult population) say that religion is not too important or not at all important in their lives.
