In a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2013\/03\/21\/section-1-obama-job-approval-confidence-on-budget-deficit\/#entitlements-priority\">March survey<\/a>, 55% said it was more important to keep Social Security and Medicare benefits as they are while 34% said cutting the deficit was more important.<\/p>\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2012\/12\/18\/a-bipartisan-nation-of-beneficiaries\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2012\/12\/SDT-2012-12-18-beneficiaries-01.png\" width=\"278\" height=\"407\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Pew Research Center <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2012\/12\/18\/a-bipartisan-nation-of-beneficiaries\/\">survey conducted Nov. 28-Dec.5 2012<\/a> found that 55% of Americans have received government benefits from at least one of the six best-known federal entitlement programs. (In addition to Social Security and Medicare, they are unemployment benefits, food stamps, Medicaid and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, commonly referred to as &#8220;welfare.&#8221; Of the major programs, unemployment benefits and Social Security are the most used.)<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey found that most Democrats (60%) and Republicans (52%) said they had benefited from a major entitlement program at some point in their lives. So had nearly equal shares of self-identifying conservatives (57%), liberals (53%) and moderates (53%).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the majority who said they had received benefits from at least one entitlement program, 32% had received help from two or more. <a
