In this year\u2019s presidential election, the campaigns of former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/16\/politics\/teamsters-president-rnc-what-matters\/index.html#:~:text=It%20was%20a%20remarkable%20moment%20Monday%20night%20at\">Donald Trump<\/a> and Vice President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/08\/19\/labor-union-presidents-endorse-kamala-harris-dnc\/74857741007\/#:~:text=Presidents%20of%20AFSCME,%20SEIU,%20LiUNA,%20IBEW,%20CWA%20and\">Kamala Harris<\/a> have made high-profile efforts to win the support of union members. We used data from Center surveys as well as federal data sources to provide insights into union members\u2019 views, such as their party affiliation and vote choice. This data also highlights how Americans view declining union membership and the effect of labor unions on society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Links to these data sources are available in the text. Another 6% favor a third-party candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voters who do <em>not<\/em> belong to a union are about equally likely to align with either party. And they are equally divided in their presidential vote preferences: 47% would vote for Trump, while 47% would choose Harris. Another 5% would back a third-party candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The share of U.S. workers who belong to a union has fallen over the past four decades.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/02\/20\/for-american-unions-membership-trails-far-behind-public-support\/\">In 1983<\/a>, 20.1% of American workers were represented by a union. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/us\/us-union-membership-rate-hits-fresh-record-low-2023-labor-dept-2024-01-23\/\">By 2023<\/a>, 10.0% of U.S. workers were in a union, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of 2023, union membership was much higher among workers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/union2.pdf\">employed in the public sector<\/a> than the private sector (32.5% vs. 6.0%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unionization rates are the lowest in the Southeast and highest in the Northeast, Alaska and Hawaii. A <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/03\/29\/amazon-vote-comes-amid-recent-uptick-in-u-s-unionization-rate\/\">Pew Research Center analysis in 2020<\/a> found that 3.1% of workers in North Carolina and 2.9% in South Carolina were unionized, compared with 22.0% in New York, 17.8% in Rhode Island, 17.7% in Alaska and 23.7% in Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Majorities of Americans say declining union membership is bad for the country (54%) and for working people (59%),<\/strong> according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/03\/12\/majorities-of-adults-see-decline-of-union-membership-as-bad-for-the-us-and-working-people\/\">January 2024 Center survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats are more likely than Republicans to view the decline in union membership as bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>69% of Democrats say the decline has been bad for the country, and 74% say it has been bad for working people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>40% of Republicans say the decline has been bad for the country, and 43% say it has been bad for workers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=189726\"><img data-dominant-color=\"eae9e3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"1028\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/10\/SR_24.10.17_unions-and-elections_2.png?resize=480,796 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/10\/SR_24.10.17_unions-and-elections_2.png?resize=620,1028 620w\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/10\/SR_24.10.17_unions-and-elections_2.png?w=620\" alt=\"A diverging bar chart showing a large partisan differences on whether decline in union membership has been bad for the U.S. or working people.\" class=\"wp-image-189726 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #eae9e3; width:310px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Like voters overall, voters who belong to unions are more likely to say Harris\u2019 policies would be better for union members than Trump\u2019s.<\/strong> While 38% of voters overall say Harris\u2019 policies would <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/09\/25\/how-voters-expect-harris-and-trumps-policies-to-affect-different-groups-in-society\/\">make things better for union members<\/a>, 28% say this about Trump\u2019s policies, according to a September 2024 Center survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Among voters who are in a union, 43% say Harris would improve things for union members, while 26% say this about Trump.<\/strong> By contrast, 46% of union voters say Trump\u2019s policies would make things <em>worse<\/em> for union members. More Liberal Democrats (86%) than conservative or moderate Democrats (66%) say labor unions affect the country positively.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>35% of Republicans believe labor unions have a positive effect on American society,<\/strong> compared with 61% who say unions have a negative impact. Negative views are higher among conservative Republicans (69%) than moderates or liberal Republicans (47%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About three-quarters of union members (74%) say labor unions have a positive effect on the country. <\/strong>A smaller share of nonmembers (53%) say the same.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About six-in-ten
