{"id":188254,"date":"2024-09-30T10:59:47","date_gmt":"2024-09-30T14:59:47","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2025-11-11T16:30:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T21:30:09","slug":"military-veterans-remain-a-republican-group-backing-trump-over-harris-by-wide-margin","status":"publish","type":"short-read","link":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/09\/30\/military-veterans-remain-a-republican-group-backing-trump-over-harris-by-wide-margin\/","title":{"rendered":"Military veterans remain a Republican group, backing Trump over Harris by wide margin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military veterans have long tended to affiliate with the Republican Party and support Republican candidates, and that remains the case today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-200-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=188257\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dac5c5\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dac5c5;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/SR_24.09.30_Veteran-Voters_1.png?resize=400,868 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"434\" width=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/SR_24.09.30_Veteran-Voters_1.png?w=200\" alt=\"Pie chart showing veterans widely support Trump for president\" class=\"wp-image-188257 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About six-in-ten registered voters who say they have served in the U.S. military or military reserves (61%) support former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, while 37% back Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a Pew Research Center survey <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/09\/09\/in-tied-presidential-race-harris-and-trump-have-contrasting-strengths-weaknesses\/\">conducted in early September<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans&#8217; vote preferences are on par with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1JKd0lNwopBqXpDglgvkrlqWgbTvsNNNSaWVtj-EkLJs\/edit?gid=970549130#gid=970549130\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">past elections<\/a>. In 2020, 60% of veteran validated voters cast their ballot for Trump, while 39% backed President Joe Biden. And in 2016, veterans voted for Trump over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by a similar margin (61% to 35%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vice presidential candidates on both tickets \u2013 Republican Sen. JD Vance and Democratic Gov. Tim Walz \u2013 have served in the armed forces. Vance was in the U.S. Marines and Walz was in the National Guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/data.census.gov\/table?q=Veterans&amp;y=2023\">According to the Census Bureau<\/a>, about 6% of American adults have served in the military, a substantially smaller share than a few decades ago. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Surveys were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other factors. <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/our-methods\/u-s-surveys\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">Read more about the ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The questions used for this analysis are drawn from previously released publications. The margin of error for the vote preferences of this group is plus or minus 4.3 percentage points. For additional details about the survey, refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/09\/09\/harris-trump-update-methodology\/\">methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/11\/08\/the-changing-face-of-americas-veteran-population\/\"><em>The changing face of America\u2019s veteran population<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-veteran-voters-identify-politically\">How veteran voters identify politically<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veteran voters have long been more likely to align themselves with the Republican Party than the Democratic Party. According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/04\/09\/changing-partisan-coalitions-in-a-politically-divided-nation\/\">our recent analysis of partisan identification<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>63% of veteran voters identify with or lean toward the Republican Party, while 35% are Democrats or Democratic leaners.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As with voters overall, there are demographic differences in veterans\u2019 partisan identification. For example, about seven-in-ten White veterans (72%) identify with or lean toward the GOP. That compares with just 11% of Black veterans, who overwhelmingly identify as or lean Democratic (82%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-veterans-see-the-candidates-policies-and-their-impact-on-veterans\">How veterans see the candidates\u2019 policies and their impact on veterans<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than half of veteran voters (55%) say that if Trump wins the election, his policies would make things better for veterans. But Trump supporters are far more likely than Harris supporters to say this of their candidate (83% vs. 62%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A third of veterans who support Harris say that her policies would not change things much either way for them. Only 11% of Trump supporters say the same about their candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large majorities of each nominee\u2019s supporters say that the other candidate would make things <em>worse<\/em> for veterans:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>82% of veteran Trump supporters say Harris would make things worse.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>69% of veteran Harris supporters say Trump would make things worse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-veterans-view-the-vice-presidential-candidates\">How veterans view the vice presidential candidates<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vance and Walz, who will meet in a debate on Oct. 1, are both military veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About half of veteran voters (53%) say they have a favorable view of Vance, while about a third (34%) say the same of Walz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-420-wide\"><a candidates\u2019 veteran supporters view their party\u2019s candidate for vice president favorably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>87% of veterans who support Harris have a favorable
