Surveys were conducted face-to-face in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the United States, we surveyed 12,693 respondents from Feb. 13 to 25, 2024. Most of the survey\u2019s respondents (10,642) are members of the American Trends Panel, an online survey panel recruited through national random sampling of residential addresses, which gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remaining respondents (2,051) are members of three other panels: the Ipsos KnowledgePanel, the NORC Amerispeak Panel and the SSRS Opinion Panel. All three are national survey panels recruited through random sampling (not \u201copt-in\u201d polls). We used these additional panels to ensure that the survey would have enough Jewish and Muslim respondents to be able to report on their views. (While Jewish and Muslim respondents are not discussed in this particular analysis, they are discussed in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2024\/04\/02\/rising-numbers-of-americans-say-jews-and-muslims-face-a-lot-of-discrimination\/\">other products<\/a>&nbsp;based on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2024\/03\/21\/majority-in-u-s-say-israel-has-valid-reasons-for-fighting-fewer-say-the-same-about-hamas\/\">this survey<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. data is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education, religious affiliation and other categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more information about the U.S. data, refer to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/our-methods\/u-s-surveys\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2024\/04\/12\/us-catholics-methodology\/\">methodology<\/a>&nbsp;for our previous report that focused on opinions among U.S. Catholics. Here are <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2024\/04\/PR_2024.04.12_Catholics_topline.pdf\">the U.S. trend questions<\/a>, along with responses, used in this analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the Latin American data, here is <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/SR_24.09.26_PopeFrancisLatinAmerica_Topline_FOR_RELEASE.pdf\">the&nbsp;question used<\/a>&nbsp;for the analysis, along with responses, and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/methods\/feature\/international-methodology\/global-attitudes-survey\/all-country\/2024\/\">the&nbsp;survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This analysis was produced by Pew Research Center as part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/topic\/religion\/religious-demographics\/pew-templeton-global-religious-futures-project\/\">Pew-Templeton Global Religious Futures project<\/a>, which analyzes religious change and its impact on societies around the world. But in 2024, 72% of Colombians share this opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest decline in favorable attitudes has been in Argentina \u2013 the pope\u2019s home country. While 91% of Argentines said a decade ago that they had a positive opinion of Francis, that share has dropped to 64% today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There have also been two other significant changes in views of the pope:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rising shares in all Latin American countries surveyed have an unfavorable view of the pope.<\/strong> In Mexico, for instance, adults today are three times more likely than they were a decade ago to voice a negative opinion of Francis (27% vs. 9%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fewer people do not give an opinion.<\/strong> This group includes people who say they don\u2019t know who Pope Francis is. In 2013-14, it also included those who said they couldn\u2019t assign a rating to him \u2013 perhaps due to the recency of his role.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While this analysis focuses on the overall adult populations of these countries \u2013 along with public attitudes in the United States \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2024\/09\/26\/many-catholics-in-the-us-and-latin-america-want-the-church-to-allow-birth-control-and-to-let-women-become-priests\/\">an accompanying report<\/a> looks at the patterns in favorability among Catholics. This is the same share who said this in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His favorability ratings in the U.S. reached high points in 2015 and 2017 \u2013 when seven-in-ten adults viewed him positively \u2013 before declining in the last few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There have been two other shifts in Americans\u2019 views of the pope over the past decade. These are similar to the patterns in Latin America:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The share who has an unfavorable view of the pope roughly doubled.
