As part of a larger study, we surveyed 9,720 adults from Aug. 26 to Sept. 2, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Surveys were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. But Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (84%) are more likely than Republicans and GOP leaners (72%) to express this view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Democrats\u2019 views have changed little since 2020, the share of Republicans who now say tech companies have this responsibility is higher than four years ago. Among older people, there is more uncertainty about how AI will be used during the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>35% of adults under 30 say AI will be used about equally for good and bad, while 17% say they are not sure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Among those ages 65 and older, 20% say AI will be used about equally for good and bad, while 39% are not sure how it will be used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans ages 65 and older are more likely than people in any other age group to be extremely or very concerned about AI\u2019s influence on the election: 68% say this.
