We surveyed 9,720 adults from Aug. 26 to Sept. 2, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Surveys were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. Another 36% are not sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among registered voters specifically:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>62% who back Trump say Vance is qualified; 7% say he is not.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>66% who back Harris say Vance is <em>not<\/em> qualified; 7% say he is.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"views-of-tim-walz-s-qualifications\">Views of Tim Walz\u2019s qualifications<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans\u2019 evaluations of Walz are somewhat more positive than for Vance: 35% of Americans say Walz is qualified, while 27% say he is not and 37% are not sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among registered voters specifically:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>69% who support Harris say Walz is qualified; 4% say he is not.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>59% who back Trump say Walz is <em>not<\/em> qualified; 8% say he is.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"overall-favorability-of-vance-and-walz\">Overall favorability of Vance and Walz<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The public\u2019s broader opinions of Vance and Walz largely parallel views of the two candidates\u2019 qualifications:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>34% of Americans view Vance favorably, while 42% view him unfavorably and 23% say they have never heard of him.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>39% of Americans see Walz favorably, while 33% view him unfavorably and 28% have never heard of him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-demographic-groups-view-vance-and-walz\">How demographic groups view Vance and Walz<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Demographic differences in views of Vance and Walz largely track with the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/04\/09\/changing-partisan-coalitions-in-a-politically-divided-nation\/\">partisan leanings<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/09\/09\/harris-trump-and-the-state-of-the-2024-presidential-race\/\">vote preferences<\/a> of various groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Age<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-420-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=187406\"><img data-dominant-color=\"eeebe2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/SR_2024.09.18_vice-president-candidate-views_2.png?resize=480,566 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/SR_2024.09.18_vice-president-candidate-views_2.png?resize=782,922 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/SR_2024.09.18_vice-president-candidate-views_2.png?resize=840,990 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"495\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/SR_2024.09.18_vice-president-candidate-views_2.png?w=420\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-187406 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #eeebe2; object-fit:cover\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Views of Walz are more positive than negative among adults under 50, while they are more divided among older Americans. The reverse is true for views of Vance, who is viewed much more positively among older adults than younger adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Younger Americans are also more likely than older Americans to say they have never heard of each candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Race and ethnicity<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black, Hispanic and Asian Americans view Walz more positively than negatively, while White Americans\u2019 views are split (39% favorable, 41% unfavorable).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to Vance, 43% of White adults have a positive view of the Ohio senator, while 41% view him negatively. Black, Hispanic and Asian Americans\u2019 views of Vance are more negative than positive. This is especially the case among Black Americans: Half have an unfavorable opinion of Vance, while only one-in-ten see him favorably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Gender<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About four-in-ten women (38%) view Walz favorably, while a smaller share (27%) view him unfavorably. Women\u2019s views of Vance are nearly the reverse: 29% have a favorable view of Vance while 40% have an unfavorable view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Men are about equally likely to hold favorable views of Vance (40%) and Walz (39%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-trump-and-harris-supporters-view-the-vice-presidential-candidates\">How Trump and Harris supporters view the vice presidential candidates<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vance and Walz are generally viewed positively by registered voters who back their respective running mates \u2013 and negatively by those who back the other major party candidate for president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>79% of registered voters who support Harris have a favorable view of Walz and 69% say he\u2019s qualified to step in as president if it becomes necessary. Just 3% have an unfavorable view of Walz and a similar share (4%) view him as <em>not<\/em> qualified to be president if need be.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>75% of voters who support Trump have a favorable view of Vance, and 62% say he\u2019s qualified to serve as president.
