Another 13% say they would back or lean toward Trump. Just 7% would support or lean toward Kennedy, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/08\/14\/harris-energizes-democrats-in-transformed-presidential-race\/\">Pew Research Center survey<\/a> of U.S. adults conducted Aug. 5-11 (before the start of the Democratic National Convention).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black voters\u2019 support for the top of the Democratic ticket has increased over the past month. The survey included 863 Black adults, 681 of whom were registered voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Surveys were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other factors. <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">Read more about the ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/08\/PP_2024.8.14_harris-trump_questionnaire.pdf\">questions used<\/a> for this analysis, the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/08\/PP_2024.8.14_harris-trump_TOPLINE.pdf\">topline<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/08\/14\/harris-trump-methodology\/\">survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"demographic-differences-in-black-voters-support-for-harris\">Demographic differences in Black voters\u2019 support for Harris\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black voters differ by age in their support for Harris. While 86% of Black voters 50 and older back her, a smaller share of Black voters 18 to 49 (68%) say the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These age differences are consistent with those for Biden in an <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/race-and-ethnicity\/2024\/05\/20\/an-early-look-at-black-voters-views-on-biden-trump-and-election-2024\/#black-voters-prefer-biden-in-2024-election-but-some-would-replace-both-candidates:~:text=Younger%20Black%20voters%20are%20more%20likely%20than%20older%20Black%20voters%20to%20say%20they%20would%20vote%20for%20Trump.%20While%20about%20two%2Dthirds%20of%20Black%20voters%20under%2050%20favor%20Biden%20(68%25)%2C%2029%25%20support%20Trump.%20Black%20voters%2050%20and%20older%20favor%20Biden%20by%20a%20wider%20margin%20(84%25%20vs.%209%25).\">April 2024 survey<\/a>. However, this is different from the pattern among registered voters of <em>all<\/em> races and ethnicities, where support for Harris is slightly higher among those 18 to 49 (49%) than those 50 and older (44%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black voters with college degrees are also more likely than those without degrees to support Harris (84% vs. 74%). This share increased to 79% in August 2024, after Harris rose to the top of the Democratic ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some groups of Black voters have had particularly large shifts in opinion over the past few months:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Women:<\/strong> 67% of Black women had a favorable opinion of Harris in May, compared with 82% in August.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Younger adults:<\/strong> 52% of Black voters ages 18 to 49 viewed Harris favorably in May. By August, 70% did.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Those with college degrees:<\/strong> Harris\u2019 favorability ratings among Black voters with college degrees rose by 20 points from May to August (62% vs. 82%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the increase in positive views of Harris is not limited to Black voters. Her favorability ratings have also increased since May <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/08\/14\/how-americans-view-harris-trump-and-biden\/#harris-and-trump-have-gained-ground-with-their-own-coalitions\">among Democrats and Democratic leaners overall<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"more-black-voters-are-motivated-to-vote-now-than-last-month\">More Black voters are motivated to vote now than last month\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many voters across demographic and political groups have become <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/08\/14\/the-presidential-matchup-harris-trump-kennedy\/#large-gap-in-motivation-to-vote-emerges-between-the-candidates-younger-supporters\">more motivated to cast a ballot<\/a> since July. Among Black voters specifically, the share who were extremely or very motivated to vote rose from 56% in July to 67% in August. Once again, women and those with college degrees had particularly large increases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>51% of Black women said they were extremely or very motivated to vote in July, compared with 67% in August.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Motivation to vote rose by almost 20 points from July to August among Black voters with college degrees (63% vs. 81%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p
