We conducted this analysis to look at past vice presidents who ran for the top job and how often they won.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this analysis, we consulted historical records from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehousehistory.org\/collections\/president-biographies\">White House Historical Association<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bioguide.congress.gov\/\">U.S. House and Senate<\/a>, presidential libraries and the <a href=\"https:\/\/millercenter.org\/the-presidency\">University of Virginia\u2019s Miller Center<\/a>, as well as news reports.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, 29 of the 49 people who have served as vice president since the country\u2019s founding have gone on to formally seek a party\u2019s presidential nomination, either immediately after leaving the vice presidency or in the years that followed. Many returned to a lower elected office or retired after serving as vice president. Still, earlier well-known presidents including John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt had previously served as vice president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among modern vice presidents, running for the top job has become more of the norm. Starting with Franklin D. Roosevelt\u2019s first term in 1933, 15 of 18 vice presidents have launched presidential campaigns of their own after serving in the deputy role. But only five of these 15 emerged victorious: Democrats Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson and Joe Biden, and Republicans Richard Nixon and George H.W. Bush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two of these five modern vice presidents-turned-presidents initially took office after incumbent presidents died and they subsequently ran for election at the top of the ticket:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Harry Truman<\/strong> had been vice president for less than three months when <a href=\"https:\/\/constitutioncenter.org\/blog\/looking-back-at-the-day-fdr-died\">FDR died in office<\/a> in 1945, elevating Truman to the Oval Office. Truman went on to be elected president in 1948.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lyndon Johnson<\/strong> took over after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/exhibits\/eyewitness\/html.php?section=14\">President John F. Kennedy\u2019s 1963 assassination<\/a>. Johnson was elected for a full, four-year term in 1964.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two others weren\u2019t elected to the top office until years after their vice presidencies ended: &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 1960, <strong>Richard Nixon<\/strong> \u2013 who was serving as Dwight Eisenhower\u2019s second-in-command \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/constitutioncenter.org\/blog\/the-drama-behind-president-kennedys-1960-election-win\">lost the presidency to Kennedy<\/a> in a close contest. He would run again, and win, in a 1968 match against then-Vice President Hubert Humphrey, a Democrat.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joe Biden,<\/strong> former vice president to Barack Obama, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delawareonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2019\/03\/08\/why-joe-biden-didnt-run-president-2016-after-death-his-son\/3014988002\/\">decided not to seek the Democratic presidential nomination<\/a> in 2016. He went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/joe-biden-wins-white-house-ap-fd58df73aa677acb74fce2a69adb71f9\">run and win<\/a> in 2020.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three modern vice presidents have won their party\u2019s nomination but lost the general election. In 1948, FDR\u2019s third-term vice president, <strong>Henry Wallace,<\/strong> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/United-States-presidential-election-of-1948#:~:text=E.%20Dewey.-,At%20a%20glance%3A%20the%20election%20of%201948,-Historical%20background\">the Progressive Party nominee<\/a>. Jimmy Carter\u2019s vice president, <strong>Walter Mondale,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/mondale-lost-the-presidency-but-permanently-changed-the-office-of-vice-presidency\/2021\/04\/19\/478b1a68-a17b-11eb-85fc-06664ff4489d_story.html\">secured the 1984 Democratic nomination<\/a>. And in 2000, <strong>Al Gore,<\/strong> Bill Clinton\u2019s second-in-command, was <a href=\"https:\/\/constitutioncenter.org\/blog\/on-this-day-bush-v-gore-anniversary\">the Democratic nominee<\/a>. Gore won the popular vote but lost in the Electoral College and <a href=\"https:\/\/constitutioncenter.org\/blog\/on-this-day-bush-v-gore-anniversary\">conceded to George W. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/news\/fdr-third-term-vice-president\">challenged Roosevelt for the 1940 Democratic nomination<\/a> and lost.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alben Barkley,<\/strong> Truman\u2019s second-in-command, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/politicaljunkie\/2009\/07\/on_this_day_in_1952_vp_alben_b.html\">sought the Democratic nomination in 1952<\/a> at age 74. But he didn\u2019t garner enough support and withdrew his name from the contest. The Democratic Party went on to nominate Adlai Stevenson II, <a href=\"https:\/\/erpapers.columbian.gwu.edu\/adlai-stevenson-1900-1965\">the grandson of Grover Cleveland\u2019s vice president<\/a>.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hubert Humphrey, <\/strong>Johnson\u2019s former vice president, secured the Democratic nomination in 1968 but lost the election to Nixon. He ran again in 1972 but was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/features\/wallace-president\/#:~:text=Democratic%20Primary%20(1972)\">unable to secure the Democratic nomination<\/a>, which went to George McGovern.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dan Quayle, <\/strong>who was second to George H.W. Bush, had a brief stint on the campaign trail ahead of the 2000 presidential election.
