Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/our-methods\/u-s-surveys\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">Read more about the ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/07\/SR_24.07.02_conversations_topline.pdf\">questions used for this<\/a> analysis, along with responses, and its <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2024\/06\/24\/role-of-government-methodology\/\">methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly seven-in-ten Americans (69%) say they talk to their close friends and family <em>a lot<\/em> about what\u2019s happening with them. Adults younger than 50 are far more likely than those 50 and older to say they talk a lot about this with family or friends (58% vs. 32%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Younger adults are more likely than older ones to chat about pop culture.<\/strong> More than four-in-ten (44%) of those under 50 say they talk a lot with family and friends about movies, TV shows and other things people are watching or listening to. And 27% of men say they talk about sports a lot, compared with 16% of women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Political issues are not discussed a lot.<\/strong> About one-in-five adults (18%) say they talk a lot about political issues; another 58% say politics comes up a little. For example, comparable majorities of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (71%) and Republicans and Republican leaners (68%) say they talk a lot about what\u2019s happening with their family and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And only about one-in-five Republicans (21%) and Democrats (18%) say they discuss political issues frequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, there are slight partisan differences in how frequently religion and pop culture come up in conversation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Republicans are nearly twice as likely as Democrats to say they talk about faith and religion a lot (24% vs. 13%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nearly half of Democrats (47%) say they talk about movies, TV shows or music a lot \u2013 compared with only about three-in-ten Republicans (28%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Democrats are also more likely than Republicans to say they talk about celebrities and famous people a lot, though few in either group say they do this (9% vs. 3%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: Here are the <a
